DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The UNC Pembroke softball team led second-ranked North Georgia in both games of Sunday's Peach Belt Conference (PBC) twinbill, but the Nighthawks took advantage of seven UNCP miscues to erase the deficits and knock off the Black & Gold 7-3 and 11-1 at Haines & Carolyn Hill Stadium in Dahlonega.
It's the fourth-straight setback in league play for the Braves (16-10, 0-4 PBC), who start the PBC slate with four losses for the first time since the 2007 campaign. The Nighthawks (32-1, 4-0 PBC) improve to 26-3 all-time against UNCP and have won the last 23 meetings between the schools.
Jessica Auld drove in a pair of runs in the opener to give her 11 on the season, while
Jamie Johnson was the lone Brave to log multiple hits in a 2-for-3 performance and also drew a walk. It was Johnson's team best 13th multi-hit games this season.
Malerie Leviner (6-4) took the loss in the circle for the Black & Gold after allowing five runs (four earned) in two innings of work.
Raygan Larson took over in relief and tossed the final four innings. She allowed two runs (one earned) on just two hits.
Rendi Wetherington dropped down a squeeze bunt to give the Braves a 1-0 lead in the third, but the hosts answered with five runs on two hits and an error in the latter half to go up 5-1 after three. Auld's two-run double in the fourth pulled the Black & Gold to within 5-3, but the Nighthawks plated single runs on the fourth and sixth to hold off the Braves 7-3.
Lexie Coxe launched her first home run of the season to give the Braves a 1-0 lead in the second inning. It was the first home run allowed by North Georgia's Amber Johns in 59 innings of work. Gerhart's first-inning single was the only other Black & Gold hit in game two.
The Nighthawks scored five runs in the third and six more in the fourth to hand UNCP its third run-rule loss of the season.
The Braves are back in action Monday with a road twinbill at Young Harris. First pitch is set for 1 p.m at E.D. Rivers Field in the mountains of north Georgia. The Mountain Lions (19-8, 3-1 PBC) swept Francis Marion on Sunday afternoon and lead the all-time series with UNCP by an 8-2 margin.
