No. 1 North Greenville Slips By No. 18 Baseball In NCAA Elimination Game

TIGERVILLE, S.C. – Top-ranked North Greenville capitalized on a costly fielding error to push across an unearned run in the fifth to provide more than enough offense for starter Blake Hamilton and the host Crusaders eliminated the 18th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team from the postseason with a 2-0 victory over the Braves on Sunday.

The setback marked the first non-conference loss of the 2018 campaign for UNCP (39-15) who capped its season with 38 or more victories for the third time in the last four years. North Greenville (46-9) advances to a 3:30 p.m. elimination contest against fourth-seeded Columbus State. The winner of that contest will advance to Monday's championship game against third-seeded Belmont Abbey.

Jarratt Mobley (2-for-3) and Roberto Rivera (2-for-4) both turned in a pair of hits to lead the Braves who managed to get two runners into scoring position in the loss. John Jones homered and drove in a pair of runs on a 4-for-5 hitting line to lead the way for the Crusaders who also got a 3-for-5 outing from Utah Jones.

Jordan Toney (3-2) struck out three and scattered six hits across five innings of work, but took the tough-luck loss anyway after allowing an unearned run to cross in the fifth. Senior Anthony Burke wrapped up his collegiate career with four innings of relief, but was not awarded a decision.

Hamilton (6-2), a University of Georgia transfer, struck out six and surrendered just six hits across his first complete game outing of the season.

Utah Jones climbed aboard via a one-out single in the fifth and moved all the way to third base moments later via a stolen base and an ensuing error on the throw down to second base. John Jones legged out an infield single two pitches later to plate the run and finish off the scoring opportunity.

The 1-0 advantage would hold up until the ninth when John Jones hit a solo homer with two outs to give the hosts an insurance run.

UNCP got Rivera into position with one out in the first, but was unable to bring the run around as Hamilton got Ethan Baucom to ground out, and then retired Trey Jacobs on a fly out to left field. Rivera moved into position again with two outs in the third, but Hamilton slammed the door on the threat by getting Clemons on a ground out to short.
