Inside Game Leads Wingate Past Women’s Basketball

WINGATE – Wingate registered a healthy advantage in the rebounding column, outscored the UNC Pembroke women's basketball team 36-16 in the paint and bridged the first and second quarters with an 18-0 run to fuel a 60-41 victory over the Braves on Wednesday evening in Cuddy Arena.

The setback marked the first true road loss of the season for the Braves (3-2) who fell to 5-16 all-time in Cuddy Arena. The Bulldogs (4-1) extended their series home win streak out to 10 games, and have now captured the last seven meetings overall with UNCP.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
UNC Pembroke led 7-2 after Melanie Horne's jumper just more than 2-1/2 minutes in, but Wingate scored six of the next eight points to make it a 1-point game, 9-8, six minutes later. Alcenia Purnell's trey on the other end of the court pushed the Black & Gold's lead back out to four points, but a free throw from Taliyah Jeter, as well as Jaia Wilson's layup with two seconds left, cut the hosts' deficit back to one point, 12-11, heading into the second period.
2ND QUARTER
The hosts continued their run of 18-straight points into the second quarter and led 26-12 after a pair of free throws from Bryanna Troutman at the 5:03 mark. ShaNiya Lester scored the next five points of the quarter to trim UNCP's deficit down to single digits, 26-17, with four minutes left in the half.  Wingate would eventually take a 32-22 lead into the halftime break.
3RD QUARTER
UNCP made it a two-possession game, 32-28, on 3-pointers from Alcenia Purnell and Tee Graham just two minutes into the second half. The Bulldogs would hold the Braves at arm's length for the remainder of the quarter, however, and lugged a 44-36 advantage into the final period.
4TH QUARTER
UNC Pembroke converted just one of its 10 field goal attempts in the fourth quarter and were unable to keep up with the home squad that shot nearly 55 percent in the period. The Bulldogs took their largest lead of the night, 60-41, on a Destiny Coleman 3-pointer with 47 ticks remaining.
