WINSTON-SALEM – Sophomore
Joshua Chepkesir shattered a 7-year-old school record in the 3,000-meter Run by nearly 12 seconds, and then busted a 42-year-old school record in the 1-Mile Run, to highlight action for the UNC Pembroke track & field team on Saturday at the JDL College Kick Off Classic.
Chepkesir edged Flagler's Justin Greene by 0.39 seconds in the mile run to take top honors in the event, and took down former standout Steve Carney's school record that was established in 1974. The Kenyan bested former UNCP all-American and Rio Olympian Pardon Ndhlovu's superlative in the 3,000-meter Run, while also registering a new facility record in that event as well.
On the women's side, newcomer
Erman Jepleting eclipsed teammate
Skylar Moreno's 1-year old school record in the 1-Mile Run by nearly 11 seconds on the way to winning that event.
UNCP's men and women combined to tally seven top-5 finishes at the opening event of their 2019-20 indoor schedule, while also 15 new personal-best times or marks as well.
The Braves will continue the indoor portion of their 2019-20 slate on January 19 when they make a return trip to the JDL Fast Track for the JDL January College Kick-off.
