Lander Uses Costly Errors To Steal Opener With No. 40 Baseball

GREENWOOD, S.C. – An ill-timed error opened the floodgates for seven unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning, and Lander rallied behind an effective outing from right-hander Alex Moore to a series-opening 10-4 victory over the 40th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team on Friday evening.
 
The setback marked the fourth-straight loss for the Braves (6-5, 1-3 PBC) who have allowed 10 or more runs in four of their five losses this season. The triumph marked the second win in the last three outings for Lander (6-7, 2-2) who has yet to play a game away from Greenwood this season.

KEY INNINGS
BOT 1 Bailey Connell's hard-hit ball in the initial at-bat in the bottom of the first was misplayed by the UNCP infield, and that eventually opened the door for seven unearned runs. Vincent Addona highlighted the scoring surge by the hosts on a 3-run blast to right field with two outs showing. 
BOT 2 Ward Betts and Mike Fitschen each tallied singles to lead off the frame, and were both moved into position on a groundout from Nathan Schreckengost. Colton Yaeger's sac fly in the next at-bat pushed the lead out to 8-0.
TOP 4 Zach Ghelfi hit a two-out single to get something going for the Braves, and eventually moved around to third base before scoring on a passed ball three at-bats later.
TOP 5 The Braves loaded the bases via a leadoff single from Ethan Baucom and a pair of hit by pitches before Jarratt Mobley tacked up another run for the visitors on an infield groundout.
TOP 6 Dawson Painter led off the frame with a solo homer to left field, and Trevor Clemons followed with a double to the gap in left field. Seth Hartings singled in the run with the next at-bat, but reliever Robbie Hoyt retired three of the next four Braves he faced to escape the inning.
BOT 7 Another infield error by the UNCP defense opened the door for a pair of unearned insurance runs for the Bearcats. Pinch hitter Carson Jones hit a two-run double with two outs showing to finish off the opportunity.
