Baseball Falls In Midweek Outing At Wingate

WINGATE – Wingate fueled a quintet of multi-run innings with 15 hits, including seven of the extra-base variety, on the way to a 10-6 victory over the UNC Pembroke baseball team on Tuesday evening at Ron Christopher Stadium.

The outcome marked the fourth loss in the last five outing for the Braves (15-15) who will close out a four-game road trip this weekend when they travel to face USC Aiken. It was the eighth-straight win for the Bulldogs (23-9) who recorded just their fourth win in the last 30 matchups with the Black & Gold.

KEY INNINGS
TOP 1 Luke Jackson was plunked by a 0-and-1 offering from Wingate starter Nick Stegman and moved into position a short time later on a throwing error by the defense. That set the table for a RBI single off the bat of Ethan Baucom.
BOT 1 UNCP starter Hank Simpson beaned Justin Guy with his first offering of the contest, and the Bulldogs put a pair of runners into scoring position minutes later on Zach Little's double. McCann Mellett hit a two-run double to give the hosts the lead, before Simpson struck out the next three batters to stop the bleeding.
TOP 2 River Ryan singled to lead off the second for the visitors, and moved to second base on a groundout by Jarratt Mobley. Zach Ghelfi singled through the left side with the next at-bat to tie the score back up.
BOT 2 Tanner Forry singled to lead off the home half of the second, and moved to third quickly on a stolen base and an errant throw on the steal attempt. Reece Daniel extended the lead on a RBI single up the middle, and the Bulldogs eventually grabbed a 4-2 advantage on a RBI groundout by Zach Little.
TOP 3 Trevor Clemons drew a five-pitch walk to lead off the third, and eventually scored on a RBI single from Elijah Helton. Helton advanced to second via an ill-timed wild pitch, and the Braves tied the score up on River Ryan's RBI single up the middle.
BOT 4 Wingate put its first two batters aboard in the fourth, but UNCP reliever Davis Hurd appeared to be on his way to escaping the jam by registering outs in the next two at-bats. However, McCann Mellett hit a comebacker to the mound in the next at-bat, and an errant throw to first base allowed both runs to score.
TOP 5 The Braves got consecutive doubles from Bobby Dixon and Elijah Helton to start the frame, and Jarratt Mobley's one-out sacrifice fly to deep centerfield eventually plated Helton with the game-tying run.
BOT 5 Davis Hurd needed just six pitches to retire the first two Bulldogs in the bottom of the fifth, but Tanner Forry gave Wingate the lead again in the next at-bat when he hammered a full-count pitch over the fence in left field. A double and a RBI single would follow to stretch the hosts' advantage out to two runs.
BOT 6 Zach Little climbed aboard via a costly error to start the frame, and McCann Mellett stretched Wingate's lead out to 9-6 with a run-scoring double to right field. Andrew Llewellyn's RBI single with two outs made it a 10-6 contest.
