Softball Competes Sweep Over Kutztown In Extra Innings

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke softball team used Emily Biddle's single up the middle to score Tatum Brummitt from third base and secure a twinbill sweep of Kutztown with a 6-5 victory in extra innings on Saturday afternoon at the UNCP Softball Field.
 
The Braves (2-0) have now won the last three matchups against Kutztown after Saturday's game which was resumed in the top of the eighth inning after weather had halted it on Friday. It was the first time the Golden Bears (0-2) have not recorded a victory over the Braves at the UNCP Invitational since the 2014 campaign.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
TOP 1 Kate Ostaszewski single to centerfield, and Brittany Hubler lit up the scoreboard with a 2-run home run to center field.
BOT 2 Rendi Wetherington singled to left field and advanced to third when Mary Sells reached first on an error by the pitcher. Tatum Brummitt singled to move the runners around and plate Wetherington, and Emily Biddle tied the score at two apiece with a sacrifice fly to deep right field.  
BOT 3 Mary Sells singled to third base to set the table for a 2-run blast from Tatum Brummitt that put UNCP on top, 4-3.
TOP 6 Taylor Knappenberger doubled down the left field line and Hannah Auvil was hit by a pitch to get two aboard for Kutztown.  An ill-timed error by the Braves allowed both runners to cross the plate and give the lead back to the visitors, 5-4.
BOT 7 UNCP put runners on first and second after a single and a walk. A long flyball from Emily Biddle allowed each runner to advance 60 feet, and Carson Powell's single down the right field line plated the tying run to send the game into extra innings.
BOT 9 With the International Tiebreaker Rule in effect, Tatum Brummitt advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, and Emily Biddle singled up the middle to score Brummitt.

The Braves will close out the UNCP Invitational on Sunday with a doubleheader against West Virginia State (1-1). First pitch of the twinbill is set for 10 a.m. at the UNCP Softball Field. Admission to all UNCP softball home games is free.
