CHARLOTTE – Freshman
Ketlyn Rodriguez Matos broke her own school record in the 200-yard Breaststroke by .01 seconds, while fellow newcomer
Mariel Mencia Martinez finished sixth in the 50-yard Freestyle, to highlight action for the UNC Pembroke swimming team on Saturday at the Queens-hosted Royal Open.
No team score was kept at the event which served as a last-chance opportunity for a trio of swimmers to improve their NCAA 'B' Standard qualifying times for the upcoming NCAA Championships. Rodriguez Matos, Mencia Martinez and teammate
Nathalia Silva all participated in time trials in their respective disciplines on Saturday evening as well.
The trio of newcomers will now await their NCAA postseason fate when invitations are announced later this month. The 2020 NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships will be held March 11-14 in Cleveland, Ohio.
