Georgia Southwestern Spoils Senior Day For Women’s Basketball

PEMBROKE – Georgia Southwestern converted on more than 46 percent of its field goal attempts and outscored the UNC Pembroke women's basketball team 20-8 in the second quarter on the way to a 73-64 victory on Sunday afternoon at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.

The setback officially capped the 2019-20 season for the Braves (11-17, 6-14 PBC) who finished with a winning record at home (7-5) for the first time since the 2016-17 campaign. It was just the second road win in the series for the Hurricanes (11-15, 7-13 PBC) who still trail the all-time series, 12-8.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
UNC Pembroke took what would be its largest lead of the afternoon, 12-7, on a free throw from ShaNiya Lester with 4-1/2 minutes left in the first quarter. The hosts shot better than 40 percent in the period and used a jumper from Deja McCain at the buzzer to take an 18-16 advantage into the second stanza.
2ND QUARTER
Georgia Southwestern bridged the first and second periods with a 17-4 run and eventually took a hefty 33-20 lead off of a fast-break layup from Kayla Smith with two minutes remaining in the half. ShaNiya Lester broke the silence for the Braves with a layup just 15 ticks later, but the Hurricanes toted a 36-26 into the locker rooms.
3RD QUARTER
The Braves trimmed their deficit back to single digits, 39-31, following a 3-pointer from Melanie Horne just two minutes into the half. Georgia Southwestern limited UNCP to just 5-for-16 from the field in the period, however, and took their largest lead of the afternoon, 56-39, on a trey from Lex Chatman with one minute remaining.
4TH QUARTER
UNC Pembroke whittled its deficit all the way down to six points, 70-64, after a jumper in the paint from Aliyah Farmer with 63 seconds remaining in regulation. The hosts came up empty on their final three field goal attempts down the stretch, however, and the Hurricanes knocked down three of their final four free throws to provide the final.
