Fourth-Quarter Surge Helps King Down Women’s Basketball

PEMBROKE – A 32-point fourth quarter highlighted by six 3-pointers helped King to an 80-76 victory over the UNC Pembroke women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 
 
The setback for the Braves (5-3, 4-1 CC) snapped a four-game win streak and marked the first loss in Conference Carolinas play this season. The triumph for the Tornado (5-2, 4-1 CC) marked their fifth win in the last six outings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
UNC Pembroke took a 14-6 lead on a layup from Gabby Smith just more than five minutes into the contest. King scored the next six points and knotted the score at 14 apiece two minutes later with a pair of made free throws from Trinity Lee. Both teams shot better than 30-percent during the quarter and were tied at 16 heading into the second period.
2ND QUARTER
Alcenia Purnell drained a trey to push UNC Pembroke's lead out to 31-18 with 3:34 left in the half. UNCP limited King to just 1-for-13 shooting from the field during the period, but Alexa Gramann scored a fastbreak layup at the buzzer and sent the teams to the locker rooms with the Braves holding a 36-25 lead.
3RD QUARTER
The hosts took what would be their largest lead of the afternoon, 48-32, when Alcenia Purnell knocked down a 3-pointer just three minutes into the half. The Tornado canned 4-of-6 of their attempts from beyond the arc, including one from Kiki Samsel with 24 ticks remaining to end the quarter with UNCP holding a slight 56-48 lead.
4TH QUARTER
King scored the first six points of the quarter to whittle their deficit back to 56-54 with 6:30 remaining in regulation. The Tornado knotted the score at 60 apiece off of a trey from Desiree Bates with just under five minutes left. King shot a game-best 64 percent during the quarter, as well as connected on 6-for-7 of their attempted from the 3-point line to help pull off the comeback.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Gabby Smith scored a game-high as well as a career-high 29 points in 28 minutes of action. Smith was 9-for-12 from the field and 11-for-13 from the charity stripe. The redshirt junior just missed a double-double grabbing eight rebounds.
+ Courtney Smith had a 12-point performance with a 6-for-8 clip from the free throw line. Smith also had six rebounds and dished out four assists.
+ Kelci Adams added 12 points and also pulled down four rebounds.
NOTABLES

+ The Black & Gold shot better than 43 percent from the field during the contest. This was the third time this season that the Braves have shot better than 40 percent from the field.
+ King held a slight advantage in the rebound column pulling down 39 while UNCP recorded 38. The Tornado, however, registered 15 offensive rebounds to UNC Pembroke's eight offensive boards. 
+ UNCP saw success working to the inside, picking up 36 points in the paint. The Braves also outscored the Tornado 20-14 on fastbreak attempts. 

UP NEXT

The Braves will take a week off from competition and be back in action on Dec. 12 at home for a non-conference matchup against St. Augustine's. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
