Columbus State Tops No. 22 Baseball In Game 2 Slugfest

PEMBROKE – The top-seeded and 22nd-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team rallied all the way back from a big deficit with five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but fourth-seeded Columbus State answered with four runs of its own in the eighth to post a Peach Belt Conference Tournament semifinal series-clinching 14-10 win over the Braves on Sunday afternoon at Sammy Cox Field.

It was the third-straight loss for the Braves (29-13) who will now be forced to wait and see if they will get one of the region's three at-large berths into the NCAA postseason when those selections are announced on May 16. The Cougars (27-14) advance to next weekend's PBC Tournament championship series and will travel to Dahlonega, Ga., to take on second-seeded North Georgia.

KEY INNINGS
TOP 6 Robert Brooks hit the last of a combined five home runs turned in by both teams on the afternoon when he launched the first offering of the frame over the fence in straightaway centerfield to give the Cougars a 10-5 lead.
BOT 7 River Ryan (double) and Gage Hammonds (hit by pitch) both reached to start the home half of the seventh inning, and UNCP sliced into its deficit with a RBI single off of the bat of Bobby Dixon in the next at-bat. Christian Jayne turned in a RBI single two batters later, Wellington Guzman plated a run on a sacrifice fly and Jayne crossed the plate on a successful double steal attempt to pull the Black & Gold to within one run. Ramsey Petty drew a 9-pitch walk to put runners on the corners for the Braves moments later, and Trevor Clemons knotted the score up when he deposited the next pitch into shallow centerfield.
TOP 8 Steven Minter singled to lead off the frame and moved into scoring position on a groundout from David Meadows seven pitches later. Dane Bullock's RBI single gave the Cougars the lead for good, but Connor Kirley tacked up a pair of insurance runs for the visitors on a 2-run triple with two outs, and Columbus State utilized a costly fielding error to score the final run of the afternoon.
