Women’s Basketball Closes Out Year With Win Against Limestone

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team established an early lead with a pair of Zaria Clark free throws at 5:34 in the opening period and did not relinquish that lead on the way to a 59-48 non-conference victory on Saturday afternoon at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
 
The victory for the Braves (7-6) marked the fourth consecutive win this season and are now 4-1 when playing on their home court.  The setback was the second straight loss for the Saints (6-7) who fall to 2-6 when playing on the road.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
Limestone made good on its first three attempts and took an early lead, but back to back 3-pointers from Aniah McManus and Kalaya Hall gave UNC Pembroke an 8-7 lead three minutes into action. The hosts connected on 50 percent of their attempts from the field and used a 9-0 scoring run to hold a 17-11 lead heading into the second quarter.
2ND QUARTER
Malea Garrison padded the UNCP lead, 23-14, with a three ball from the top of the key with 6:35 remaining in the half. Both teams struggled to find the offensive rhythm shooting a combined 6-for-27 from the field, but four made free throws from the Black & Gold sent the teams to the locker room with UNC Pembroke leading 29-22.
3RD QUARTER
The Saints used a bucket from Kalisha Hill to cut their deficit back to 33-27 with 6:37 left to play in the period. Both teams suffered from cold shooting for nearly two minutes before Alcenia Purnell broke the silence with three consecutive free throws. Limestone knocked down a pair of 3-pointers, including one at the buzzer from Quin Bryd, the Braves held a 47-39 advantage heading into the final stanza.
4TH QUARTER
UNCP opened the quarter on an 8-0 run that helped push the lead out to 55-39 with 5:06 left to play in regulation. Limestone responded with six straight points to trim their deficit back to 55-45 with 2:24 on the clock, but the Braves made good on all four free throw attempts in the final minutes to help secure the victory. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Zaria Clark scored a team-high 14 points on 5-for-16 shooting. Clark was perfect from the free throw line and just missed a double-double pulling down nine rebounds in 39 minutes of work.
+ Aniah McManus recorded a career-best nine points on 3-for-5 shooting. The junior also finished with a steal and an assist.
+ Courtney Smith matched a career-best in steals with six steals. Smith tallied six boards as well as six points.
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke has now won seven out of its last eight contests. Saturday's victory marked the fourth consecutive win this season.
+  UNCP established the lead with 5:34 in the opening period and never trailed after that. 
+ The Braves forced 22 Limestone turnovers and converted those into 18 points.
+ The Black & Gold outscored the Saints 26-12 with points in the paint.
+ The Saints finished the contest shooting 34.7 percent from the floor, while the Braves shot 32.7 from the field. However, UNC Pembroke was 19-for-22 from the charity stripe while Limestone was just 7-for-8. 
UP NEXT
The Braves will be back in Conference Carolinas play on Wednesday when they welcome Converse (1-11, 1-5 CC) to Pembroke. Tipoff is slated for 5 p.m. at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
