Women’s Basketball Upsets Belmont Abbey

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team scored 23 points during the third quarter and shot better than 61 percent during the frame to secure a 61-57 victory over Belmont Abbey on Saturday afternoon at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.  
 
The victory for the Braves (15-8, 13-6 CC) marks second straight home win, as well as the sixth straight win against Belmont Abbey. The setback for the Crusaders (15-7, 13-5 CC) snapped a five-game winning streak and is just their second loss in the last 12 contests.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
UNC Pembroke took a 10-4 lead with a Gabby Smith jumper in the paint with 4:13 on the clock. The hosts limited Belmont Abbey to just 4-for-19 shooting from the field and held a 12-8 lead heading into the second quarter.
2ND QUARTER
Alexis Schulz whittled the Belmont Abbey deficit back to 14-13 with a jumper at the 6-1/2-minute mark. The Crusaders knotted the score at 18 apiece when Brittany Autry drained two free throws, but the Braves held a slight 22-20 advantage as the teams headed into the locker rooms.
3RD QUARTER
UNCP took a 37-27 lead when Naomi Gilbert canned a trey just four minutes into the half. BAC made it a two-possession game, 41-37, when Abigail Crain made good on a fastbreak layup at the two minute mark. The Braves connected on 61.5 percent of their shots during the frame and heading into the final stanza leading 45-38.
4TH QUARTER
Gabby Smith's layup with 6:51 on the clock extended the UNC Pembroke lead out to 51-42. Back-to-back 3-pointers from Jo Snow cut the Belmont Abbey deficit back to 59-57 with 11 seconds remaining, but Tiara Williams knocked down two free throws to secure the upset. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Gabby Smith connected on 6-for-10 of her shots from the field for 16 points. Smith also pulled down five rebounds and had a pair of assists and blocks.
+ Courtney Smith tallied 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Smith had a pair of assists and rebounds in 37 minutes of action. 
+ Alcenia Purnell logged double-digit scoring with 13 points highlighted by a 3-for-7 clip from the perimeter. 
+ Freshman Zaria Clark came off the bench and grabbed a team-best 10 rebounds. 
NOTABLES
+ The Black & Gold shot 43.8 percent from the field and 35.3 percent from the 3-point line. It was the fifth straight outing that UNCP has shot 40 percent or better from the field. 
+ UNCP picked up 22 points inside the paint, while Belmont Abbey was limited to just 16 points in the paint. 
+ The Braves picked up 13 points from its bench highlighted by performances from Naomi Gilbert, Diamond Fedrick and Zaria Clark.
UP NEXT
The Braves will be back in action on Wednesday when they welcome Mount Olive (14-2, 12-2 CC) to Pembroke for Social Media and Sneakerhead Night. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
