Defense Key For Women’s Basketball With Win At Erskine

DUE WEST, S.C. - The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team picked up 21 points from its bench and had three players to register double-figure scoring to help secure a 55-42 victory over Erskine on Saturday afternoon inside Belk Arena.

With Saturday's win at Erskine, the Braves (18-8, 16-6 CC) matched their highest win total since the 1991-93 season. The program also posted 18 wins during the 2001-02 and 2004-05 seasons. The Flying Fleet (1-24, 1-22 CC) fall to 1-13 when playing on their home court.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
UNC Pembroke took a 7-5 lead off of a layup from Courtney Smith at the seven-minute mark. Erskine used a trey from Carmen Chandler to take an 8-7 advantage, but UNCP scored on their next two possessions and used a 3-pointer Kelci Adams to a 12-8 lead with two minutes remaining in the period. 
2ND QUARTER
The Flying Fleet trimmed their deficit back to 20-19, with an Anzya Cook layup with 5:46 left in the half. The hosts put together a quick 5-0 scoring surge to take a 24-20 lead with four minutes on the clock. UNCP shot 33.3 percent from the field during the frame, and used a layup from Gabby Smith as time expired to send the teams to the locker rooms with the Braves leading 30-26.
3RD QUARTER
UNC Pembroke opened the half on a 10-2 scoring run that stretched to the 3:43 mark to push its lead out to 40-28. The Braves limited the Flying Fleet to just 3-for-12 shooting during the period and held a 44-33 lead heading into the final stanza.
4TH QUARTER
UNCP took its largest lead of the afternoon, 51-33, with a fastbreak layup from Aniah McManus just 1:50 into the quarter. Erskine scored six points in a row to cut their deficit back to 53-42 with 53 seconds remaining, but Tiara Williams knocked down two free throws with 25 seconds left in regulation to stop any comeback.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Courtney Smith scored a game-high 15 points on 5-for-11 shooting. Smith nearly registered a double-double with nine rebounds. The redshirt junior also added four assists and four steals in 36 minutes of work.
+ Freshman Zaria Clark logged double-figure scoring with a 10-point performance. Clark was one rebound shy of a double-double with nine boards. 
+ Gabby Smith added 12 points on 5-for-10 shooting and had six rebounds and a pair of assists. 
NOTABLES
+ With Saturday's win at Erskine, the Braves (18-8, 16-6 CC) matches their highest win total since the 1991-93 season. The program also posted 18 win during the 2001-02 and 2004-05 seasons. 
+ The Braves also recorded their 15th win in conference play, which marks a program best.
+ UNCP forced 18 Erskine turnovers and converted those into 18 points. 
+ UNC Pembroke also picked up 26 points in the paint and 21 points from its bench.
UP NEXT
The Braves will close out the away portion of their schedule on Tuesday when they travel to Wilson to take on league-leading Barton (24-1, 20-1 CC). Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. inside the Wilson Gymnasium.
