WINSTON-SALEM – Joshua Chepkesir shattered a seven-year-old meet record in the 5000-meter Run, while
Orlandus Gamble bested the High Jump field to claim the first two event titles for the UNC Pembroke track & field teams at the opening day of the Conference Carolinas Indoor Track & Field Conference Championships.
Chepkesir finished the 5000-meter Run in a time of 14:17:89 to break Ahmad Nesbitt of North Greenville's meet record set in 2015. The Distance Medley Relay squad of
Lucas Nervo,
Wyatt Kuhnemann,
Delsin Burkhart,
Jack Phieffer earned a spot on the podium with a second place finish with a time of 10:31.48.
On the women's side,
Raigan Evans and
Lillian Marino each earned all-conference honors in the Weight Throw with second and third place finishes, respectively.
Dy'Air McCormick (60-meter Dash) and
Quanterra Harrison (60-meter Hurdles) each placed first in their respective event to earn a spot in the finals tomorrow.
The men's team currently sits in second place with 34 points, which is 23 points behind Mount Olive who leads after five scored events. The women's team finished the opening day in third place with 24 points, and 22 points off pace of Mount Olive who leads on the women's side, as well, after five scored events.
The Braves will be back in action on Monday for the final day of the Conference Carolinas Indoor Track & Field Championships. The first event is set to begin at 10:30 a.m. at the JDL Fast Track.
