Women’s Basketball Overwhelms King

BRISTOL, TENN. – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball game dominated the inside game with 38 points in the paint while added 25 points from its bench to cruise to a 84-64 victory over King on Friday evening inside the Student Center Complex.
 
The victory for the Braves (13-7, 11-5 CC) helped revenge a loss to King earlier this season and marks the sixth win away from Pembroke this season. The setback for the Tornado (9-7, 8-5 CC) marked the second straight this season and the first loss on their home court.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
UNC Pembroke knotted the score at 10 apiece with a jumper in the paint from Zaria Clark just over halfway through the opening quarter. King used a 9-0 to take what would be their largest of the night, 19-10, with 2:37 on the clock. UNCP outscored King 8-2 in the final minutes of the period, but the hosts held a slight 21-18 lead at the end of the period.
2ND QUARTER
A 10-0 to that stretched to the 5-1/2 minute marked pushed the Braves out in front with a 27-21 lead. UNCP knocked down 53.3 percent of their shots from the field and limited King to just 25 percent shooting to hold a 35-28 lead as the teams headed into the locker rooms.
3RD QUARTER
The Tornado opened the half with a 7-0 scoring surge to knot the score at 35 apiece two minutes into the quarter. The Braves held the hosts scoreless for nearly five minutes and used a 10-0 scoring run to push the UNCP lead out to 48-38 with three minutes on the clock. King connected on just 3-for-16 of their attempts from the field during the frame as UNC Pembroke held a hefty 56-44 advantage heading into the final stanza.
4TH QUARTER
A Gabby Smith layup extended the UNCP lead out to 67-52 with 6:20 remaining in regulation. King chipped away at its deficit, 70-60, with a running layup from Caroline Harville with just under four minutes left to play. Courtney Smith made good on two free throw attempts for the largest lead of the night, 84-61, with 36 ticks remaining to secure the outcome. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Courtney Smith registered a career-high and game-high 21 points on 8-for-11 shooting. Smith tallied five rebounds and was perfect from the free throw line and 3-point line.
+ Gabby Smith recorded 19 points with an 8-for-11 clip from the field. Smith also logged five boards.
+ Alcenia Purnell tallied 15 points highlighted by a 4-for-8 performance from the perimeter. Purnell also had a pair of assists and steals.
+ Zaria Clark logged double-digit scoring with 11 points on 5-for-7 shooting.
+ Kelci Adams pulled down a team-best six boards. Naomi Gilbert, Diamond Fedrick and Lillian Flantos all added five rebounds.
NOTABLES
+ The Black & Gold shot a season-best 49.2 percent from the field. The Braves also shot better than 40 percent from the perimeter for the fourth time this season.
+ UNCP also registered a season high with points scored. 84 points in the most points scored by the Braves since a 94-73 victory over Georgia Southwestern on Jan. 21, 2019.
+ UNC Pembroke picked up 25 points from its bench.
+ The Braves outscored King 38-6 with points in the paint.
UP NEXT
The Braves will close out its two-game road trip on Saturday when they make the short trip over to Banner Elk to take on Lees-McRae (4-12, 4-10 CC). Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. inside Williams Gymnasium.
