Mount Olive Uses Extra Innings To Take Series With No. 24 Baseball

MOUNT OLIVE – Jack Casbarro's two-out single in the bottom of the 10th inning plated Jaydon Gartner with the game-winning run as the home-standing Trojans rallied back from an early 4-0 deficit to upset the 24th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team, 5-4, on Saturday at Scarborough Field.

It was just the second series loss of the season for the Braves (28-13, 17-7 CC) who host No. 2 Wingate on Tuesday evening before heading to I-95 rival Francis Marion next weekend. The triumph gave Mount Olive (24-16, 13-11) its first weekend series victory since sweeping Chowan, March 12-13.

KEY INNINGS
TOP 2 The Braves used two hits, a pair of free passes and a costly throwing error to plate four runs in the second inning. Trent Harris and Christian Jayne both scampered across home plate via the fielding miscue, Spencer Faulkner scored on a wild pitch and Wellington Guzman crossed on Bobby Dixon's groundout.
BOT 5 The Trojans got off the mark with a lone run in the bottom of the fourth inning, but used a trio of unearned runs to even things up in the fifth. Vito Patierno plated a run on a ground-rule double with two outs, and Alden Cottle finished off the damage moments later on a 2-run single to right field.
BOT 10 The Trojans loaded the bases with one out showing on the right field scoreboard, and Jack Casbarro delivered the goods two batters later when he punched a one-strike offering into the gap in right field.
