Women’s Basketball Routs North Greenville To Extend Streak

PEMBROKE – An impressive offensive performance including a 47.9 percent clip from the perimeter helped the UNC Pembroke women's basketball team to a 84-37 victory over North Greenville on Saturday afternoon at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
 
The victory for the Braves (11-6, 8-1 CC) marked the eighth-straight victory this season, as well as the third consecutive victory against North Greenville. The setback for the Crusaders (4-10, 4-4 CC) snapped a two-game winning streak and are now just 1-6 when playing away from Tigerville, Ga.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
North Greenville knotted the score at 8 apiece with a jumper in the paint from Kennedi McLean, but UNC Pembroke responded with an 11-0 run to put the lead out to 19-8 after a trey from Courtney Smith with three minutes left to play in the opening frame. The Braves shot 62.5 percent from the field and knocked down 6-of-7 attempts from deep to hold a 28-13 lead heading into the second period.
2ND QUARTER
Zaria Clark padded the UNCP lead, 32-17, with a jumper at the 6:39 mark. The Crusaders were limited to just 16.7-percent shooting from the field during the quarter, while the hosts closed out the half on an 11-0 run after a layup from Hannah Russell with 15 seconds remaining to send the teams to the locker rooms with the Braves holding a convincing 45-20 advantage.
3RD QUARTER
Jayda Glass connected on a 3-pointer to whittle the North Greenville deficit back to 48-25 with 8:33 on the clock. Kalaya Hall's layup sparked the offense for the Black & Gold to go on a 13-3 run that stretched to the 4:39 mark and pushed the lead for UNCP out to 61-28. The Braves shot 57.9 percent from the field and held a hefty 71-29 lead heading into the final stanza.
4TH QUARTER
Kalaya Hall drained a three ball from the top of the key just two minutes into the period to extend the UNCP lead out to 78-31. North Greenville answered with a bucket from Kennedi McLean just 20 seconds later, but the Braves limited the Crusaders to just eight points in the final quarter to close out the game.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Kalaya Hall finished with a game and season-best 29 points on 12-for-15 shooting. The redshirt junior was an impressive 4-for-6 from the perimeter, and grabbed six boards in 24 minutes of action.
+ Courtney Smith chipped in for 13 points highlighted by a 3-for-3 outing from the 3-point line. The redshirt junior dished out a trio of assists and had a pair of rebounds.
+ Kelci Adams added 10 points on a 4-for-8 shooting performance in 19 minutes of action. Adams pulled down three rebounds and had a pair of assists.
+ Aniah McManus finished the afternoon with five rebounds, four assists, and four steals in 25 minutes of work.
NOTABLES
+ Saturday's victory was the most lopsided win for the Braves since an 82-26 home win over North Carolina Wesleyan on Nov. 30, 2009. The result, however, marked the most lopsided victory over a conference opponent in the 49-year history of the program, besting out a 72-29 rout of Flagler on Feb. 19, 2012. 
+ The eight-game win streak marks the best run in program history since the 10-game victory run during the 1988-89 season. 
+ The Braves limited the Crusaders to single digit scoring in the final three quarters of the game.
+ UNCP shot 47.9 percent from the field during Saturday's victory. The shooting performance marked the best outing since shooting 49.2 percent last season at King. 
+ UNC Pembroke also limited North Greenville to just 26.0 percent from the field, which marked the worst offensive performance since shooting 24.2 percent against Barton last season.
+ The Black & Gold scored 39 points off of 21 turnovers. 
UP NEXT
The Braves will be begin a three game road trip on Monday when they travel to Due West, S.C., to take on Erskine (4-9, 2-7 CC). Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. at Belk Arena.
