No. 14 Wingate Outlasts Women’s Basketball

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team had four players log double-digit scoring, but No. 16 Wingate shot 52.2 percent from the perimeter on the way to a 69-63 victory on Sunday inside the DeLoach Center for the final day of the Conference Challenge. 
 
The Braves (1-1) shot 81.8 percent from the free throw line and scored 11 points from fast break opportunities. The Bulldogs (2-0) never trailed during Sunday's contest and picked up 20 points from their bench.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
Wingate took a 14-7 lead with a 3-pointer from Emily Hege with 6:19 on the clock. Six consecutive points from Kalaya Hall cut the UNC Pembroke deficit back to 19-15 with 4:13 left in the opening period. The Bulldogs shot 64.2-percent from the field and scored the final six points of the quarter to hold a 25-15 lead. 
2ND QUARTER
Natalie Evington hit a three from the top of the key to trim the deficit back to 31-20 halfway though the period, but Wingate pushed its lead back out to 37-22 with a trey from Hannah Clark. UNCP limited WU to just 25-percent shooting from the field, and a pair of 3-pointers from Hannah Russell and Natalie Evington at the end of the quarter sent the teams to the locker rooms with Wingate holding a slight 37-28 lead. 
3RD QUARTER
The Braves shot a game-high 66.7 percent from the field and used a 7-0 run to cut their deficit back to 37-44 following a layup from Hannah Russell just three minutes into the half. The Bulldogs put together an 11-0 run to extend their lead out to 60-45 with 32 seconds left in the quarter, and held a 61-47 advantage heading into the final stanza.
4TH QUARTER
Both teams struggled offensively at the start of the quarter, but Kalaya Hall broke the silence with a 3-pointer for the first bucket of the period as UNCP trailed 61-50 with 6:21 left in regulation. The Braves went on a 6-0 run to trail just 63-60 with just over two minutes remaining, but Wingate made good on all four free throw attempts to stop a UNCP comeback. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Zaria Clark finished with a team-best 16 points and was 6-for-7 from the free throw line. The junior pulled down eight rebounds and added two assists and a block. It was the second consecutive double-digit scoring outing for Clark. 
+ Kalaya Hall turned in her second consecutive double-figure scoring night with 15 points. Hall finished with a trio of steals, two assists and one block.
+ Hannah Russell also logged her second consecutive double-figure scoring performance with 11 points. Russell flirted with a double-double with a team-best nine rebounds. 
+ Kelci Adams also added 11 points keyed by a 3-for-5 clip from the perimeter. 
NOTABLES
+ The Braves shot 37.7 percent from the field and finished the night with a 36.4 percent clip from the perimeter. 
+  UNCP scored 26 points from the paint and scored 16 points off of 13 ingate turnovers. 
+ The Black & Gold recorded a season-best seven steals and three blocks. 
+ UNC Pembroke outscored Wingate in the second quarter and in the fourth quarter. UNCP outscored WU 16-8 in the final quarter. 
+ Wingate has won the last 10 matchups between the two teams. The last two contests have been decided by a total of seven points. 
UP NEXT
The Braves will be back in action on Wednesday when they make the short trip to Fayetteville to lock horns with Fayetteville State. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. at the Felton J. Capel Arena.
