Free Throws Key For Women’s Basketball In Victory Over St. Augustine’s

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team shot 40 percent in each of the final two quarters and scored 18 points in transition on the way to a 61-52 victory over St. Augustine's on Saturday at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
 
The victory for the Braves (2-2) snapped a two-game losing skid and marked the fourth consecutive win over St. Augustine's. The setback for the Falcons (2-1) marked their first loss of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
Kalaya Hall knocked down a 3-pointer from the top of the key to give UNC Pembroke an early 8-2 lead just two minutes into the contest. A 9-1 scoring run capped off with a trey from Prophet Sheffield gave St. Augustine's an 11-9 lead with three minutes left in the period. The Braves shot 36.6 percent from the field and scored the final four points of the frame to hold a 13-11 lead heading into the second quarter. 
2ND QUARTER
A Lillian Flantos jumper extended the UNCP lead out to 15-11 with 8:55 left in the half. The Falcons shot 35.7 percent from the field and took what would be their largest lead of the game, 26-22, with a layup from Keziah Soogrim with 28 ticks on the clock, but Aniah McManus canned a pair of free throws the end the half and send the teams to the locker room with SAU holding a slight 26-24 advantage. 
3RD QUARTER
The Braves started the half on a 5-0 run and took a 29-26 lead with a free throw from Lillian Flantos. Kelci Adams sparked the offense with a fast break 3-pointer from the corner to give the hosts a 34-28 lead with seven minutes left in the period. St. Augustine's used a five point swim to cut its deficit back to 40-39 with just over two minutes on the clock. UNCP shot 40 percent from the field, but a trey at the buzzer for SAU ended the period with the  UNCP holding a slight 45-42 lead heading into the final quarter. 
4TH QUARTER
UNC Pembroke went on an 11-0 scoring run to extend its lead out to 58-44 with 3:36 on the clock. St. Augustine's was limited to just 19.0 percent shooting as UNCP used a Natalie Evington three to give the Braves their largest lead, 61-47, with 2:35 remaining in regulation. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Kalaya Hall scored a game-best 18 points keys by a 8-for-9 clip from the free throw line. Hall also grabbed seven rebounds, had a pair of assists and steals, and logged a block. 
+ Zaria Clark finished the contest with 13 points after a 7-for-8 showing from the free throw line. 
+ Lillian Flantos came off of the bench and provided a spark with a career-best 10 rebounds and nearly registered a double-double with seven points. The senior matched a career best with four assists. 
NOTABLES
+ The Braves shot a season-high 28 free throws and made good on 21 of those attempts. UNCP shot 14 free throws just in the third quarter. The Falcons were held to just 9-for-12 from the charity stripe.
+ UNC Pembroke scored 25 points off of 16 St. Augustine's turnovers. 
+ The Black & Gold also saw success in transition with 18 fast break points. 
+ UNCP held the lead for 78.9-percent of the game.

The Braves will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Gaffney, S.C. to face Limestone. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. inside the Timkin Center.
