Sharp-Shooting Women’s Basketball Downs Young Harris

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team shot a season-high 50.9 percent from the field and was 13-for-16 from the free throw line in the final quarter on the way to a 78-71 victory against Young Harris on Saturday at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 
 
The Braves (8-3, 3-0 CC) have now won their last five games and improve to 5-1 this season when playing in Pembroke. The Mountain Lions (3-8, 0-3 CC) have lost their last four games and fall to 1-3 when playing on the road this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
Young Harris went on a 8-2 run to take what would be its largest lead of the night, 10-4, with 4:32 on the clock. The Braves cut their deficit back to 10-8 with a pair of baskets from Zaria Clark with 3:32 left to play in the quarter, but the Mountain Lions pushed their lead out to 15-10 with a trey from Taylor Gardner with just under two minutes on the clock. The Braves shot 50 percent from the field, but YHC canned a triple as time expired to lead 18-16. 
2ND QUARTER
Aniah McManus sparked the offense on a with a three from the top of the key as UNCP went on a 7-2 scoring surge to take a 23-20 advantage just two minutes into the quarter. Young Harris tied the score at 29 with a jumper from Taylor Gardner at the 4:39 mark, but the hosts shot a game-best 66.7 percent from the field and closed out the period on a 9-5 run to lead 38-34 as the teams headed into the locker rooms. 
3RD QUARTER
The Mountain Lions chipped away at their deficit with a running layup from Trinity Edwards 30 seconds into the half, but Zaria Clark's jumper padded the UNCP lead, 40-36, just 20 seconds later. Malea Garrison knocked down a 3-pointer from the corner to extend the UNC Pembroke lead out to 46-39 with 4:54 left in the period, but Young Harris responded with a three of their own to trail 46-42. The Braves shot 50 percent from the field during the quarter and used a layup from Hannah Russell as time expired to hold a 55-49 advantage heading into the final stanza.
4TH QUARTER
A bucket from Zaria Clark and a three ball from Anastacia Sinclair extended the UNC Pembroke lead out to 62-53 halfway through the quarter. UNCP took its largest lead of the night, 66-54, with a three from Kelci Adams with 2:50 left to play in regulation, but a 10-2 YHC run cut their deficit back to 68-64 with 1:29 left to play. The Braves were 13-for-16 from the charity stripe during the frame to secure the victory. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Zaria Clark scored a game-high 20 points on a 9-for-15 shooting performance. The Stanley native had six rebounds, four assists and two steals in 36 minutes of action.
+ Kalaya Hall finished with 11 points and was 7-for-8 from the free throw line. The senior pulled down four rebounds. 
+ Malea Garrison and Aniah McManus each added nine points. McManus tallied four assists and three boards, while Garrison came off of the bench and had two rebounds. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot a season-best 50.9 percent from the field during Saturday's victory. 
+ The Braves held the lead for 72.9 percent of the contest. 
+ UNCP has now the last five meetings against Young Harris when playing in Pembroke. 
+ The Black & Gold scored 20 points from fast breaks and 22 points in the paint.

The Braves will play their final game of 2023 on Tuesday when they travel to Salisbury to face No. 6 Catawba. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. inside Goodman Gym.
