Women’s Basketball Defeats Winston-Salem State In Overtime Thriller

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team held a lead as many as 10 points, but a layup from Lillian Flantos with 17 seconds remaining in overtime proved to be the difference on the way to a 63-62 victory over Winston-Salem State on Saturday at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 
 
The victory for the Braves (6-3) marked the first win against Winston-Salem State and is now the third consecutive victory. The setback for the Rams (5-4) snapped a two-game winning streak and fall to 2-2 when playing on the road.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
Winston-Salem State tied the score at 7 apiece with a 3-pointer from Kennedi Simmons with 5:23 on the clock in the opening period. Lillian Flantos made a layup to spark a 7-0 run capped off with a trey from Kalaya Hall to give UNC Pembroke a 14-7 advantage with a minute left in the period.
2ND QUARTER
The Rams scored the first four points of the frame to knot the score at 14 apiece just two minutes into the quarter. The Braves went on a 12-2 run capped off with a fast break layup from Zaria Clark to take their largest lead of the night, 26-16, with 2:23 remaining in the half. WSSU responded with an 11-0 run to close out the half and sent the teams to the locker rooms with the Rams leading 27-26.
3RD QUARTER
Kelci Adams canned a 3-pointer to give UNCP a slight 32-31 lead, but WSSU used a four point surge to give them a 35-32 lead with four minutes on the clock. Winston-Salem State shot 57.1 percent from the field and limited UNC Pembroke to just 18.1 percent shooting as the Rams held a slight 37-36 lead heading into the fourth quarter. 
4TH QUARTER
Winston-Salem State used a triple from Kennedi Simmons to take what would be its largest lead of the night, 47-43 with 6:57 left in regulation. The Braves canned a three ball from Kalaya Hall to take a slight 52-51 advantage with 2:21 on the clock. Winston-Salem State's Amaya Tucker sank a three from the top of the key to tie the score at 56 with 23 seconds on the clock, and sent the game to overtime as UNCP's final shot attempt did not fall.
OVERTIME
Kalaya Hall made good on a three pointer from the top of the key 36 seconds into overtime to give the hosts a 59-58 lead. Winston-Salem State scored four straight points and took a 62-59 advantage with a minute remaining, but Aniah McManus cut the UNCP deficit back to 62-61 with a jumper in the paint with 36 seconds on the clock. The Braves forced a turnover and used a bucket from Lillian Flantos to take a 63-62 lead with 17 seconds remaining. The Rams attempted a jumper with one second remaining, but Kalaya Hall blocked the shot and UNCP grabbed the rebound to fuel the outcome. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Kalaya Hall finished the night with 20 points and was a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line. The senior dished out seven assists, grabbed four rebounds and had two blocks in 38 minutes of work.
+ Zaria Clark turned in 14 points on a 6-for-13 shooting performance. The Stanley product pulled down four rebounds, had a trio of assists, one block and one steal. 
+ Kelci Adams added 11 points on a 3-for-8 shooting night from the perimeter. The redshirt junior flirted with a double-double with eight rebounds.
+ Lillian Flantos also added eight points and nearly had a double-double with a team-best 10 rebounds. Flantos also had a team-high three steals. 
NOTABLES
+ The Braves have now won their last three contests.
+ During Saturday's contest, there were 11 lead changes and nine ties during the game. However, UNC Pembroke held the lead for 53.9 percent (24:16) of the game.
+ The Braves picked up 15 points in transition and held the Rams to six points. 
+ UNCP limited WSSU to just four steals, which matched a season low.
+ The Black & Gold have now shot better than 36 percent from the field in the last five games. 
UP NEXT
The Braves will be back in action on Sunday when they travel to Conway, S.C. for an exhibition contest against Coastal Carolina. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. inside the HTC Center.
