No. 13 Baseball Rallies Late, Holds Off No. 14 Belmont Abbey

PEMBROKE – Visiting and 14th-ranked Belmont Abbey stormed all the way back from a late 7-0 deficit to grab an 8-7 lead in the eighth inning, but the 13th-ranked UNC Pembroke got RBI knocks from Christian Jayne and Joey Rezek in the bottom of the frame to rally past the Crusaders, 9-8, in the series opener on Friday at Sammy Cox Field.

The Braves (7-0, 1-0 CC) improved to 18-5 in conference openers under head coach Paul O'Neil with Friday's triumph, while also stretching their multi-season home win streak out to a dozen games. It was the first loss of the season for the Crusaders (9-1, 0-1) who secured their best start to a season in nine years with a home win over No. 5 Wingate on Tuesday.

UNCP starter Trent Harris struck out 10 and surrendered just four hits across six innings of work, but did not get a decision. Rhett James (2-0) picked up his second win of the season with 1-2/3 innings of relief work, while Chase Jernigan worked a scoreless ninth to register a save.

KEY INNINGS
BOT 6 The Braves sent 10 batters to the plate in a 5-hit, 4-run sixth inning that helped them push their lead out to 7-0. Will Hood got the scoring started with a 2-run single to the gap in right field, while Carlos Amezquita (sac fly) and Christian Jayne finished off the scoring inning with run-scoring at-bats.
TOP 7 Belmont Abbey countered by sending 10 batters of their own to the plate in the following frame, and used three hits, two free passes and a trio of costly errors by the Black & Gold to plate six unearned runs. The Crusaders scored their first two runs of the evening on a bases-loaded walk and an ensuing hit by pitch, and then followed with three run-scoring at-bats to trim their deficit down to a lone run.
TOP 8 Garrett Browder climbed aboard via a leadoff bean ball, but reliever Rhett James appeared to be on the way to recovering after sitting down the next two Crusaders in order. Patrick Taylor had other plans, however, when he took a 2-and-2 offering from James into the trees in left field.
BOT 8 Carlos Amezquita legged out a double to lead off the home half of the eighth, and Christian Jayne doubled down the right field line moments later to bring Amezquita scurrying home with the game-tying score. Joey Rezek's RBI single through the right side two batters later provided the eventual game-winning run.
