No. 21 Baseball Rumbles Past Francis Marion In Series Opener

PEMBROKE – Visiting Francis Marion sent its entire order to the plate in a 5-run second inning to forge an early lead, but the 21st-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team answered with 16-straight runs of its own to fuel a 17-10 victory over the Patriots in the series opener on Friday evening at Sammy Cox Field.
 
It was the third-straight win for the Braves (16-4, 6-1 CC) who improved to 6-1 in series openers this season with the result. Francis Marion (11-11, 6-4) has now dropped three of its last four outings, and fell to 2-5 away from Florence, S.C., with Friday's result.
 
Trent Harris (4-0) scattered seven hits and struck out six across seven innings from the hill to pick up his team-leading fourth victory of the campaign.

KEY INNINGS
TOP 2 The Patriots took a 1-0 deficit into the second, but marched its entire batting order to the plate in a 5-run frame to forge an early 5-1 advantage. The visitors tacked up a quartet of hits and took advantage of a pair of errors by the Black & Gold to aid the scoring outburst.
BOT 2 UNCP countered with five runs of its own in the home half of the second, pounding out five hits and utilizing a pair of visitor errors to take the lead for good. Spencer Faulkner deposited a bases-loaded single into right field, and Christian Jayne trimmed the deficit to a pair of runs in the ensuing at-bat via a 2-run single through the right side. Ethan Ott followed with a RBI single through the left side, and Kody O'Connor put UNCP out in front with a sac fly to deep centerfield.
