No. 13/16 Baseball Sweeps Tuesday Twinbill With Bluefield State

PEMBROKE – The 13th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team pounded out 16 hits and scored 13 times in the first four innings to fuel a 22-5 victory over Bluefield State in the opener, and then used a go-ahead homer from Joey Rezek in the bottom of the third inning to complete a doubleheader sweep of the Big Blue on Tuesday evening at Sammy Cox Field.
 
It was the 14th and 15th home wins of the season for the Black & Gold (23-5) who will open up a short four-game road trip this weekend at top-ranked and defending national champion North Greenville. Bluefield State (8-14) has now dropped six-straight games, and fell to 3-7 in road outings this season.
 
Tyler Strickland (2-0) struck out three batters and surrendered just one earned run in 3-1/3 innings of relief to pick up the win for the hosts in game 1, while newcomer Luke Barrow (2-0) struck out nine in four scoreless innings of relief to grab the win in the nightcap.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
BOT 3 The Braves scored lone runs in the first and second innings to take a lead they would not relinquish, but sent 14 batters to the plate in the third on the way to busting the game wide open with nine insurance runs. Joey Rezek highlighted the big inning with a grand slam, but the Braves got RBI at-bats from four other players in the frame as well.
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
TOP 3 The Big Blue managed base hits with two of their first three at-bats in the third, and eventually took their second lead of the afternoon, 3-2, with a pair of scores. A costly fielding error by the UNCP infield brought the game-tying run across home plate, while Brantley Durham provided the go-ahead run on a double down the left field line.
BOT 3 Kody O'Connor reached on a one-out double to get something going for the Black & Gold in the home half of the frame, and Joey Rezek capped the scoring on the evening two batters later when he tagged a 1-ball offering over the fence in centerfield.

The Braves will open up a four-game road trip this weekend when they head to Tigerville to take on top-ranked and Conference Carolinas-leading North Greenville (26-2, 14-1 CC) in a three-game set at Dillard Field. The squads will open up the series with a 3:30 p.m. contest on Friday.
