No. 21 Baseball Rallies Twice To Rattle No. 27 Wingate

PEMBROKE – The 21st-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball offset a 3-0 deficit with three runs in the bottom of the third frame, and then rallied for two more runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to stun visiting Wingate, 5-4, on Tuesday evening at Sammy Cox Field.

The Braves (29-10) improved to 32-10 against their U.S. 74 counterparts  under head coach Paul O'Neil with Tuesday's victory, while also notching their 19th home win of the 2023 campaign as well. It was just the second loss in the last six outings for Wingate (24-14) who has now come away empty on its last six trips to Pembroke.

Trent Harris (5-2) struck out six and scattered four hits in three innings of relief on the way to registering his fifth victory of the campaign. Starter Chase Jernigan struck out six batters as well in four innings of work, but did not earn a decision.

KEY INNINGS
TOP 5 Seaver King drew a 4-pitch walk to lead off the fifth, and Michael Dansky gave the visitors a 3-0 lead moments later via a double to the gap in right field.
BOT 5 Kasen McCawley and Christian Jayne registered consecutive singles to start the home half of the fifth, and UNCP got on the board thanks to a RBI single off of the bat of Ethan Ott. A RBI ground from Will Hood, as well as a costly wild pitch, knotted the game up at three runs apiece.
TOP 9 Seaver King laced a 2-out triple off of the wall in right field to get something going for the Bulldogs, and Michael Dansky legged out an infield single with the next at-bat to give Wingate their second lead of the evening.
BOT 9 UNCP loaded the bases with its first four at-bats in the bottom of the ninth to chase all-American Mitch Farris from the hill. Reliever Sam Brodersen put the second out on the board via a swinging strikeout, but Will Hood punched a 1-and-1 offering over the head of second baseman Carson Simpson to plate a pair of runners and walk it off.
