No. 30 Baseball Splits With No. 7 Mount Olive, Takes Series

PEMBROKE – The 30th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team fell on the wrong end of a pair of seventh-inning errors on the way to dropping a tough 7-6 decision in the opener of Saturday afternoon's twinbill, but used a pair of home runs in the night cap to fuel an 8-7 victory that clinched its weekend series with 7th-ranked Mount Olive.

The results gave the Braves (36-13, 19-10 CC) their first weekend series victory over their Conference Carolinas counterparts since the 1990 campaign. It was the fourth win in the last five outings for the Trojans (32-14, 18-11) who closed out the regular season with a 13-10 road record.

Jonathon Jacobs (7-3) scattered five hits and struck out seven over six solid innings in the nightcap to post his seventh win of the season, while Luke Barrow struck out four across three relief innings to pick up his second save.

Carlos Amezquita registered a pair of stolen bases in the third inning of game two to shatter Paul Dunlap's 50-year-old single season stolen bases record. Amezquita currently leads all of NCAA Division II with 43 stolen bases.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
BOT 4 The Braves strung together four hits and scored as many runs in a momentum-changing fourth inning that put them out in front. The first four batters of the frame all reached base safely, including a RBI single from Trent Harris. Carlos Amezquita hit a game-tying 2-run single with two outs, and the hosts added their final score on Christian Jayne's RBI single.
TOP 6 Josh Jones (walk) and Davis Halstead (single) climbed aboard with two outs showing to chase Branden Kunz from the hill, and the Trojans knotted the score up with the next at-bat on a costly fielding error.
TOP 7 Jack Casbarro climbed aboard via a leadoff double and moved to third on a groundout with the next at-bat. A failed pickoff attempt two batters later eventually brought Casbarro home with the game-winning score.
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
BOT 3 UNCP drew three consecutive free passes with one out on the board, and Ethan Ott logged the first hit of the game for the Braves when he crushed Erik Johnson's first offering over the fence in right field.
TOP 8 Landon Choboy logged a one-out double, moved to third base on a wild pitch and pulled the Trojans to within a lone run for the second time in the contest when he scored on Cooper George's RBI groundout.
BOT 8 Spencer Faulkner drew a 5-pitch walk with one out to get something going for the Braves, and Joey Rezek gave the hosts a pair of insurance runs when he followed with a 2-run blast to right field.
