No. 17/20 Baseball Completes Season Sweep Of Coker

PEMBROKE – The 17th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team scored four runs in the bottom of the opening frame, and then held off a pair of middle-inning rallies, to top visiting Coker, 10-5, on Tuesday evening at Sammy Cox Field.
 
The result, coupled with last Tuesday's 4-3 win in Hartsville, S.C., gave the Braves (27-9) a season sweep of the Cobras, while also helping the Black & Gold improve to 9-0 this season against left-handed starters. It was the sixth-straight setback for Coker (14-26) who fell to 3-19 all-time in Pembroke.
 
Hope Mills native Tyler Strickland (3-0), the first of a pre-determined 6-pitcher rotation for the hosts, picked up the win with 2-1/3 innings of work from the hill. Southpaw Chase Jernigan struck out four batters in across three innings of scoreless relief, but was not awarded a decision.

KEY INNINGS
BOT 1 UNCP sent its entire order to the plate amid a 4-run first inning, and never looked back after that. Carlos Amezquita (hit by pitch) and Christian Jayne (walk) opened the inning with free passes, and a wild pitch eventually gave the Black & Gold the lead for good. The Braves also got run-scoring at-bats from Will Hood, Joey Rezek and Trent Harris.

UP NEXT
The Braves will get a short rest before diving back into Conference Carolinas play against Emmanuel (20-15, 9-9 CC) on Thursday and Friday in Franklin Springs, Ga. The squads will open the series with a 5 p.m. contest on Thursday, before closing out the league series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Friday.
