Francis Marion Holds Off Women’s Basketball

FLORENCE, S.C. – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team scored 14 points from its bench, but Francis Marion shot 43.8 percent in the final period on the way to a 63-57 victory over the Braves on Wednesday inside the Smith University Center. 
 
The setback for the Braves (12-6, 7-2 CC) snapped a two-game winning streak and are now 4-3 when playing on the road this season. The Patriots (13-5, 8-1 CC) have now won their last seven contests and have won the last nine when playing at home against UNCP.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
Kalaya Hall and Kelci Adams knocked down back-to-back triples to give UNC Pembroke a 10-5 lead with 5:21 on the clock. Francis Marion answered with a 3-pointer from Trinity Adams, but a driving layup from Aniah McManus padded the UNCP lead 12-8, with just under four minutes on the clock. The Braves shot 42.9 percent from the field and held a slight 16-15 lead after the opening period. 
2ND QUARTER
Francis Marion took a 18-16 advantage with an old-fashioned three-point play from Lauryn Taylor with 6:55 left to play in the half, but a three ball from Alcenia Purnell knotted the score at 18 apiece just seconds later. The Braves took a 25-23 lead with a jumper from Zaria Clark with three minutes left in the half, but the Patriots scored the final five points of the quarter to hold a slight 28-25 lead as the teams headed into the locker rooms.
3RD QUARTER
Aniah McManus tied the score at 28 apiece with a 3-pointer just 59 seconds into the quarter. UNCP put together a 5-0 scoring run to take a 35-30 lead with a pair of Zaria Clark free throws at the 6:17 mark. Francis Marion canned a pair of 3-pointers to tie the score at 38 apiece with 4:49 left to play in the frame and closed out the quarter on an 8-4 run to hold a 46-42 lead heading into the final stanza.
4TH QUARTER
Zaria Clark cut the UNCP deficit back to 50-47 with a three from the top of the key with 6:47 left to play in regulation. Aniyah Oliver made back-to-back threes to give FMU their largest lead of the night, 56-47, at the 5:43 mark. A free throw from Kalaya Hall cut the deficit back to 60-54, but the hosts used a layup from Jada Richards to fuel the outcome. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Kalaya Hall finished with a team-high 15 points. Hall pulled down seven rebounds and added a pair of assists.
+ Courtney Smith came off of the bench to add 12 points and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. The senior grabbed four boards in 22 minutes of work.
+ Zaria Clark also added 12 points in 38 minutes of action. Clark pulled down seven rebounds, had a trio of assists and two steals.
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 34.7 percent from the field 31.8 percent form the perimeter. 
+ Francis Marion held a 14-6 advantage with second chance points and a 22-14 advantage with points in the paint. 
+ The Black and Gold committed 18 turnovers and Francis Marion scored 15 points from those turnovers. 
UP NEXT
The Braves will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Tigerville, S.C. to lock horns with North Greenville. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. inside Hayes Gymnasium.
