Strong Offensive Night Helps Women’s Basketball By Mount Olive

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team was firing on all cylinders on Wednesday with a 72-44 victory against Mount Olive at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 
 
The Braves (14-6, 9-2 CC) have now won their last two contests and improve to 18-0 when playing Mount Olive in Pembroke. The setback for the Trojans (5-13, 3-7) snapped a two-game winning streak and are now 3-8 when playing on the road.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
Mount Olive took what would be its largest lead of the night, 5-3, following a three pointer from Laila Anderson just under four minutes into the contest. A 6-0 run from UNC Pembroke gave the Braves a 10-5 lead with a triple from Kelci Adams with 3:44 left to play in the quarter. The hosts shot 46.7 percent from the floor and held a 20-12 lead with a three from Courtney Smith to end the period.
2ND QUARTER
The Trojans cut their deficit back to 22-16 with a Tiandria Tucker bucket with 5:28 left to play in the half. A 7-0 run extended the UNC Pembroke lead out to 29-16 following a triple from Kalaya Hall with 3:15 left in the half. The Braves shot a game-high 63.6 percent from the field and closed the half out on a 10-5 run and held a 39-21 lead as the teams headed into the locker rooms. 
3RD QUARTER
Mount Olive opened the half on a 6-0 run to trim its deficit back to 39-27, but Lillian Flantos knocked down a three ball from the top of they key to pad the UNCP lead,  42-27 at the 6:28 mark. The Braves extended their lead out to 50-31 with an old-fashioned three-point play from Malea Garrison with four minutes left in the quarter. Both teams shot better than 40 percent from the field, but an Alcenia Purnell 3-pointer gave the hosts a 55-37 lead heading into the final stanza.
4TH QUARTER
UNC Pembroke went on a 12-1 scoring surge to start the period that stretched to the five-minute mark and gave the Braves a 67-38 advantage with a Malea Garrison layup. UNCP limited UMO to just a 1-for-15 (6.7%) shooting performance during the quarter, and a jumper in the paint from Malea Garrison gave UNCP its largest lead of the night, 70-40 with four minutes left in the contest. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Kalaya Hall finished with a team-best 23 points and was 8-of-14 from the field. The senior added a trio of assists and had two steals in 30 minutes of work.
+ Malea Garrison came off of the bench and added 10 points on a 4-for-6 shooting performance. 
+ Courtney Smith finished with nine points, while Lillian Flantos and Alcenia Purnell each added eight points. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 50.0 percent from the field. It was the second time this season that the Braves have shot 50 percent or better during the game. 
+ The Black & Gold canned 10 3-pointers and shot 40.0 percent from the perimeter. IT was the second time this season the team has made double-digit 3-pointers.
+  The Braves limited Mount Olive to just 25.9-percent shooting. It was the worst shooting performance in the last 10 games for the Trojans.
+ Mount Olive posted a 21-7 advantage on the offensive glass.
+ UNCP scored 32 points off of 22 UMO turnovers.

The Braves will trek to Franklin Springs, Ga., on Saturday to lock horns with Emmanuel. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. inside the Shaw Athletic Center.
