Women’s Basketball Routs Converse

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team limited Converse to just 13 points in the second half and shot 48.3 percent from the field to highlight a 75-32 victory against the Valkyries on Saturday at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 
 
The Braves (9-4, 4-0 CC), who did not trail during Saturday's victory, have now won six out of their last seven contest and improve to 6-1 when playing at home. The Valkyries (5-7, 2-3 CC) fall to 0-5 all-time against UNCP and are 2-3 when playing on the road this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
UNC Pembroke started the game on a 9-0 run that stretched to the 5:18 mark with a fast break layup from Kelci Adams. Converse scored the next three points, but a the Braves shot 31.3 percent from the field and held a 11-6 lead at the end of the period.
2ND QUARTER
UNCP put together another 9-0 scoring surge to extend its lead out to 20-6 with a jumper in the paint from Zaria Clark with 6:15 remaining in the half. The Valkyries used an 8-0 run to cut their deficit back to 24-19, but Courtney Smith's jumper at the buzzer sent the teams to the locker room with the Braves holding a 26-19 lead. 
3RD QUARTER
An 8-3 scoring surge capped off with a layup from Kalaya Hall padded the UNC Pembroke lead 34-22 just three minutes into the quarter. The Braves connected on 60 percent of their attempts from the field and used a fast break layup from Courtney Smith to hold a 49-29 advantage heading into the final period. 
4TH QUARTER
Back-to-back triples from Kelci Adams extended to hosts lead out to 56-29 with 7:43 left to play in regulation. The Black & Gold connected on 8-for-12 of their attempts from the field and did not allow Converse to score a basket during the period, and used an three from Anastasia Sinclair to take their largest lead of the evening, 75-32.  
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Kalaya Hall finished with a game-high 17 points on a 7-for-12 shooting performance. Hall dished out four assists and also pulled down a pair of rebounds.
+ Zaria Clark posted a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. The Stanley native has now registered 13 career double-doubles.
+ Aniah McManus added six points, five assists and five rebounds, while Courtney Smith returned to action and turned in seven points, two steals and one rebound.
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke outscored Converse 46-13 in the second half. The scoring surge was highlighted by a three-point fourth quarter from the Valkyries. 
+ The Braves shot an impressive 48.3 percent from the field and held Converse to a season-low 22.0 percent shooting performance.
+ The Black & Gold posted a 24-8 advantage with points in the paint and added 22 points off of 16 turnovers.
+ 11 different UNCP players scored during Saturday's victory helping the Braves to 25 points bench points.
+ Saturday's margin of victory marked the largest this season. It was the largest margin of victory since an 84-37 victory against North Greenville on Jan. 14, 2023.  
UP NEXT
The Braves will skip town on Wednesday and travel to Murfreesboro, N.C., to battle Chowan. Tipoff is slated for 5 p.m. at Bob Burke Court.
