No. 22 Women’s Basketball Stays Hot, Downs Erskine In Conference Opener

PEMBROKE – The 22nd-ranked UNC Pembroke women's basketball team shot 76.4 percent from the floor in the first quarter and finished with 42 points inside the paint to fuel a 73-60 victory against Erskine on Saturday at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 
 
The Braves (5-1, 1-0 CC) push their win streak out to four games and have now won their last two conference openers. The Flying Fleet (1-3, 0-1 CC) have now lost their last three contest and fall to 0-5 when playing UNCP.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
Hannah Russell scored the first seven points of the game to give UNC Pembroke an early lead, but Erskine stopped the run with a layup to trail 7-2 three minutes into the contest. The Flying Fleet worked their deficit back to 19-11, but the Braves shot 76.4 percent from the floor and closed out the quarter on an 11-3 run to lead 30-14 at the end of the period. 
2ND QUARTER
The Braves padded their lead, 36-16, with a layup from Anastasia Sinclair at the 7:55 mark, but the Flying Fleet would chip away at their deficit, 38-24, with a triple from Ahrianna Scott with 4:16 remaining in the half.  A layup from Stella Mollica sparked the hosts on an 11-5 run to close out the period and send the teams to the locker rooms with UNC Pembroke leading 49-29. 
3RD QUARTER
A fast break layup from Natalie Evington gave UNC Pembroke its largest lead of the night, 55-33, just four minutes into the quarter. Erskine would work its deficit back to 60-46 via a jumper from Janelle Carter with just under two minutes on the clock, but the Braves scored the final five points of the period to lead 63-46 heading into the final stanza. 
4TH QUARTER
Anastasia Sinclair cushioned the UNCP lead, 65-46, with a fast break layup just 22 seconds into the frame. A 7-0 Erskine run cut the Flying Fleet's deficit back to 65-53, but Zaria Clark stopped the run and started a 6-0 run for the Braves to push their lead out to 71-53 with 4:35 remaining in regulation. The Flying Fleet scored the next seven points, but Anastasia Sinclair made a pair of free throws for the final score of the game. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Hannah Russell finished with a game-high 20 points on an 8-for-18 shooting performance. The senior nearly posted a double-double with nine rebounds in 29 minutes of work. 
+ Anastasia Sinclair turned in a 17-point showing fueled by a 6-for-11 shooting clip. The sophomore pulled down six rebounds and dished out a trio of assists.
+ Zaria Clark nearly logged a double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds. The senior also finished with four steals. 
+ Stella Mollica finished with 11 assists and seven rebounds. The newcomer picked up three steals in 36 minutes of work. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 39.5 percent from the field during Saturday's victory. 
+ The Black & Gold saw success in transition scoring 21 points from fast breaks. 
+ The Braves scored 42 points from inside the paint and 21 points from 17 Erskine turnovers. 
+ UNCP never trailed on Saturday. 

UP NEXT
The Braves will travel to face Belmont Abbey on Tuesday for Conference Carolinas action. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. inside the Wheeler Center.
