Women’s Basketball Downs Elizabeth City State

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team shot 42.4 percent from the floor and had four players score in double figures on the way to a 68-53 victory against Elizabeth City State on Saturday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 
 
The Braves (9-2) have now won their last four games and improve to 2-0 against Elizabeth City State. The Vikings (3-6) have now lost their last two contests and fall to 2-4 on the road.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
UNC Pembroke shot 47 percent from the floor and started on a 12-0 run capped off with a layup from Hannah Russell at the 4:51 mark. Elizabeth City State shot 12.5 percent from the field and scored its first bucket with 2:41 on the clock. UNCP closed out the quarter on a 7-2 surge after a layup from Anastasia Sinclair at the buzzer to give the hosts a 19-4 advantage. 
2ND QUARTER
Stella Mollica knocked down a triple to start the period followed by a layup from Tiana Spann to extend the UNCP lead out to 24-4 at the 7:12 mark. The Vikings worked their deficit back to 27-8 following a fastbreak layup from Asaya Bulgin halfway through the quarter, but a jumper in the paint from Stella Mollica cushioned the Braves lead, 29-8 moments later. UNC Pembroke shot 46.7 percent from the field and held a 36-16 lead as the teams headed into the locker room.
3RD QUARTER
Elizabeth City State started the half on an 8-2 run to work its deficit back to 38-24 after a layup from Jayah Johnson-King just three minutes into the frame. An old-fashioned three-point play from Anastasia Sinclair pushed the UNCP out to 41-24 before the Vikings cut their deficit back to 43-29 after a pair of made free throws. The Braves put together an 8-2 run highlighted by triples from Malea Garrison and Kelci Adams to give the hosts a 51-31 lead with just under four minutes on the clock. UNC Pembroke would take its largest of the night, 56-34, after a fastbreak layup from DeNaira Williams with 56 seconds on the clock. 
4TH QUARTER
A 9-0 surge from Elizabeth City State cut the Vikings deficit back to 58-46 after an old-fashioned three-point play from Tiana Amos with four minutes remaining in regulation. Stella Mollica pushed the UNCP lead out to 60-46 with a jumper at the 3:44 mark, as the hosts would score six straight points capped off with a jumper from Zaria Clark with under a minute to fuel the outcome.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Kelci Adams finished with 12 points on a 4-for-7 shooting performance. The graduate student pulled down three rounds and had a trio of assists. 
+ Anastasia Sinclair added a dozen points along with five rebounds, five assists and four steals. 
+ Senior Zaria Clark flirted with a double-double with 12 points and seven rebounds. The senior also added four steals and a pair of assists. 
+ Stella Mollica finished the night with 10 points on a 4-for-6 shooting night. The newcomer dished out five assists and had a trio of steals.
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot a 42.4 percent from the field during Saturday's victory. 
+ The Braves never trailed during the contest. 
+ The Black & Gold held a 20-7 advantage on second chance points.
+ UNCP scored 19 points off of 22 ECSU turnovers.

The Braves will be back in action on Tuesday when they welcome Shorter to town for Employee and Education Appreciation Day. Tipoff is set for noon at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. Admission is free.
