Davidson Defeats Women’s Basketball In Exhibition Contest

DAVIDSON – Davidson shot 59.3-percent from the floor and scored 50 points from inside the paint on the way to an 84-53 victory over the UNC Pembroke women's basketball team on Wednesday afternoon for an exhibition inside John M. Belk Arena.

 
Tuesday was the first time the Braves have faced Davidson. The victory for the Wildcats (4-7) snapped a four-game skid and improve to 4-0 when playing at home.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
UNC Pembroke took its largest lead of the afternoon, 7-2, after a triple from Zaria Clark two minutes into the contest. Davidson went on a 9-0 run to gain an 11-7 advantage after an old-fashioned three-point play from Millie Prior, but a bucket from Malea Garrison stopped the hosts run and cut the UNCP deficit back to 11-9 with four minutes remaining in the period. Davidson closed out the quarter on a 10-4 surge to hold a 21-13 lead after the opening period. 
2ND QUARTER
The Wildcats cushioned their lead, 30-13, after starting the frame on a 9-0 run that stretched to the 7:11 mark capped off with a fastbreak layup from Issy Morgan. A jumper from Malea Garrison and a 3-pointer from Natalie Evington worked the UNCP deficit back to 30-18, but Davidson would answer with a 10-4 run to lead 40-22 with 2:23 remaining in the half. The Braves used a 7-0 surge to chip away at their deficit, 40-29, with a three from Malea Garrison with 1:16 on the clock, but the Wildcats scored the final five points of the half to hold a 45-29 advantage as the teams headed into the locker rooms. 
3RD QUARTER
The Wildcats scored the first five points of the half, but a layup from Tiana Spann whittled the UNC Pembroke deficit back to 50-31 with 7:32 on the clock. Davidson shot 58.3 percent from the floor and put together a 14-5 scoring surge to pad its lead, 64-36 at the two-minute mark. Malea Garrison canned a 3-pointer to cut the UNCP deficit back to 65-39 moments later, but the hosts knocked down a pair of free throws to extend their lead 66-39 heading into the final stanza. 
4TH QUARTER
Kelci Adams made good on a three followed by a bucket from Tiana Spann as UNC Pembroke trailed 69-44 at the 7:35 mark. Davidson took its largest lead of the game, 78-46, following a running layup from Eliza Buerk with 4:36 remaining in regulation. Stella Mollica hit a triple, followed by a pair of baskets from DeNaira Williams to cut the score back to 80-53 with two minutes on the clock. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Tiana Spann finished with 12 points on a 6-for-9 shooting performance in 18 minutes of action. 
+ Malea Garrison came off of the bench to turn in a dozen points on a 5-for-14 clip. The senior flirted with a double-double pulling down a team-best eight rebounds. She also added a trio of blocks.
+ Zaria Clark and newcomer DeNaira Williams each added seven points.
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke finished the contest shooting 37.5 percent from the field. Davidson shot 59.3 percent from the floor.
+ The Braves picked up 22 points from its bench. 
+ Davidson posted a 50-18 advantage with points in the paint. 
+ The Wildcats also added 20 points from 12 UNCP turnovers. 

UP NEXT
The Braves will hit the road for the final time in 2024 on Saturday when they lock horns with Winston-Salem State. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. inside the Clarence E. Gaines Center.
