Women’s Basketball Gets Big Win On Senior Day Against Francis Marion

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team used a 21-point fourth quarter to help secure a 54-49 key victory against Francis Marion on Saturday afternoon for senior day at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 
 
The victory for the Braves (19-6, 13-2 CC) marked the seventh-straight victory for the team and marked the most victories at home since the 1991-92 season. The setback for the Patriots (17-7, 12-3 CC) marked the second consecutive road loss this season and fall to 9-6 when playing on the road.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
Francis Marion took an early 7-1 lead after a layup from Lauren Taylor just 1-1/2 minute into the action. UNC Pembroke put together a 10-0 run to take a slight 13-9 advantage after Kalaya Hall's free throws, as the hosts held a 15-13 lead after the opening period. 
2ND QUARTER
The Braves extended their lead out to 17-13 via a layup from Aniah McManus 30 seconds into the frame. The Patriots used a triple from Aniyah Oliver to knot the score at 19 apiece at the 6:46 mark, but the Black & Gold scored the next four points to push their lead out to 23-19 with four minutes left in the half. FMU put together a 7-0 run to take a 26-23 lead, but Kalaya Hall's layup at the buzzer sent the teams to the locker rooms with Francis Marion holding a slight 30-27 lead. 
3RD QUARTER
UNC Pembroke scored the first four points of the half, but a bucket from Lauren Taylor kept Francis Marion out in front 32-31 with 7:21 on the clock. Both teams suffered from cold shooting, but Malea Garrison broke the silence with a jumper to tie the score at 33 apiece with just under four minutes on the clock. FMU closed out the quarter on a 7-0 run to hold a 40-33 advantage heading into the final stanza.
4TH QUARTER
The Patriots took their largest lead of the afternoon, 44-37 following a Trinity Adams jumper with 7:28 left in regulation. However, UNCP would go on a 10-0 scoring run to lead 47-44 after Courtney Smith knocked down a pair of free throws at the four-minute mark. Francis Marion was able to pull within one point, 49-48, with 3:06 left to play, but the hosts canned 5-of-8 of their final free throw attempts to hold onto the victory. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Kalaya Hall finished with a game-high 18 points following a 5-for-14 shooting performance. The senior flirted with a double-double with a team-best seven rebounds. Hall also had a trio of steals. 
+ Zaria Clark came off the bench to add 12 points and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Clark pulled down four rebounds, had two assists and one steal. 
+ Courtney Smith added eight points, while Lillian Flantos and Aniah McManus each chipped in seven points. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 35.4 percent from the field. 
+ UNCP forced FMU to make 20 turnovers. It was the most turnovers for the Patriots in the last five games. 
+ The Black & Gold outscored Francis Marion 20-16 in points in the paint. 
+ The Braves picked up 21 points in the fourth quarter, 13 of which came from the free throw line. 
+ The 49 points scored for Francis Marion marked a season-low for the program. 
UP NEXT
The Braves will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to face Mount Olive. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. inside Kornegay Arena.
