Women’s Basketball Rallies Late, Falls To No. 17 Catawba In NCAA Regional

SALISBURY  The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team put together a second half surge, but fell 58-48 to No. 17 Catawba in the opening round of the NCAA Southeast Regional inside Goodman Gym.
 
The Braves (23-8) finished the season with the most wins since the 1991-92 season. The Indians (24-5) advance to the second round of the tournament and face Georgia Southwestern on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
Catawba shot nearly 31 percent from the field in the opening period and took an early 8-0 lead following a layup from Janiya Downs three minutes into the action. UNC Pembroke used a bucket from Hannah Russell and a triple from Courtney Smith to cut its deficit back to 10-7, but the Indians closed out the period on a 6-2 run to hold a 16-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.
2ND QUARTER
The hosts stretched their lead out to 27-9 after an 11-0 run to start the period, but the Braves put together a quick 6-2 scoring run to trim their deficit back to 29-15 with 1:36 left until halftime. The Indians shot 35.2 percent from the field during the period and held a 32-17 lead as the teams heading into the locker rooms. 
3RD QUARTER
UNC Pembroke started the half on a 9-0 run and worked its deficit back to 32-26 with a jumper from Aniah McManus three minutes into the half. UNCP pulled with five points, 35-30, after a running layup from Courtney Smith, but Catawba closed out the quarter on a 6-0 run to hold a 41-30 advantage heading into the final stanza.
4TH QUARTER
The Braves made good on 7-of-8 of their free throw attempts to start the period and capitalized on a jumper from Zaria Clark to work the deficit back to 46-39 with 4:30 remaining in regulation. The Indians pushed their lead out to 54-41 with a 3-pointer from Nala Baker with 1:43 on the clock to hold off a comeback. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Kalaya Hall finished with a dozen points and was 6-for-6 from the free throw line. The senior grabbed six rebounds, had two assists and one steal in 36 minutes of action.
+ Zaria Clark also finished with 12 points on a 5-for-10 shooting performance. The Stanley native nearly registered a double-double with eight rebounds in 21 minutes of work. 
+ Courtney Smith came off of the bench to add eight points. Smith dished out a pair of assists as well. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 33.3 percent from the field and limited Catawba to 30.4 percent shooting. 
+ The Indians were 18-of-27 from the free throw line, while the Braves were 11-of-12.
+ Catawba outscored UNCP 22-14 with points in the paint and hit a trio more three's compared to UNC Pembroke. 
+ John Haskins departs Pembroke as the winningest coach in program history with 262 victories with the women's program.
