No. 8 Coker Too Much For Women's Basketball

PEMBROKE No. 8 Coker shot 41.8 percent from the field and picked up 17 points inside the paint on the way to a 76-60 victory over the UNC Pembroke women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 

The setback for the Braves (0-2) marked their third loss in the last four meetings against Coker. The victory for the Cobras (2-0) marked just the second time picking up a win against UNCP in Pembroke.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
The first quarter saw Coker take an early lead against UNC Pembroke, finishing with a 19-11 advantage. Coker's Shawntenna Tillman was pivotal, contributing with a layup and multiple steals, including one at 8:38 that led to a fastbreak score. Janay Legagneur added to the Cobra's dominance in the paint, scoring several baskets and securing offensive rebounds. UNC Pembroke's Anastasia Sinclair managed to keep her team competitive with a jumper at 6:48, but turnovers hindered UNCP's momentum throughout the quarter. Bre'Asia Washington contributed with a layup at 1:14, but Coker held a 19-11 lead after the first quarter. 
2ND QUARTER
Lauren Bell opened the scoring for UNC Pembroke with a layup at 9:48, but Kristynn Knight quickly responded with a layup for the Cobras. Tillman hit two 3-pointers, including one assisted by Yasmine Cook at 6:02, helping Coker extend their lead. Anastasia Sinclair contributed with a pair of free throws and a fastbreak layup, while Tiana Spann added four points in the paint for UNC Pembroke. In the final moments, Kamari Thompson's layup with 17 seconds in the half solidified the Cobra's 34-25 lead as the teams headed into the locker rooms.
3RD QUARTER
In the third quarter, Coker extended its lead over the Braves with a strong offensive performance, highlighted by Tillman scoring 10 points, including a fastbreak layup late in the period. Ja'Kea Brunson contributed with a key 3-pointer at 7:37, but Anastasia Sinclair led a late push for UNCP with a series of layups and free throws, scoring eight consecutive points in the final minutes. Despite these efforts, Coker maintained control, outscoring UNC Pembroke 24-17 in the quarter to hold a 58-42 lead heading into the final period. 
4TH QUARTER
Anastasia Sinclair started the fourth quarter strong for the Braves with a layup, narrowing the gap against Coker. Despite Sinclair's efforts, Coker maintained their lead, with Tillman contributing a layup and a free throw to extend their advantage. Shaymiah Bailey was active on the boards for UNC Pembroke, securing multiple rebounds and adding a layup. Coker's Kristynn Knight responded with consistent scoring, including a late jumper and layup. The final moments featured free throws from Abby Sheets, but UNC Pembroke could not close the deficit..
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Anastasia Sinclair finished with 22 points on an 8-for-13 shooting performance. The junior pulled down six rebounds and had a pair of steals in 36 minutes of work.
+ Abby Sheets added eight points and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line. The freshman pulled down a trio of rebounds as well.
+ Newcomer Shaymiah Bailey pulled down a career-high nine rebounds and added six points. Bailey also had one block in 12 minutes of work. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 32.8 percent from the field and finished the contest going 17-for-22 from the free throw line. 
+ UNCP scored 11 points from Coker's 10 turnovers. 
+ Coker tallied 40 points in the paint and picked up 17 second chance points. 

+ The Braves picked up 20 points from their bench. 
UP NEXT
The Braves will make the short trip to Fayetteville on Wednesday to face Fayetteville State. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. inside Felton J. Capel Arena.
