Fayetteville State Knocks Off Women's Basketball

PEMBROKE The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team scored 34 points from inside the paint, but a strong second quarter from Fayetteville State helped the Broncos defeat the Braves 70-58 on Wednesday evening inside the Felton J. Capel Arena. 

The setback for the Braves (0-3) marked the fourth consecutive loss when playing Fayetteville State in Fayetteville. The Broncos (3-0) have now won four out of the last five meetings against UNCP.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
The first quarter began with a tight contest between the Braves and Fayetteville State. Anastasia Sinclair scored the opening basket for UNC Pembroke with a layup at 7:49, setting the tone for a back-and-forth quarter. Fayetteville State responded with a series of fastbreaks, highlighted by KaNyah O'Neal's layup at 7:22, giving the Broncos a brief lead. Bre'Asia Washington's jumper at 3:08 brought UNC Pembroke within one point, but the quarter closed with Fayetteville State ahead, 9-8, after a 3-pointer by O'Neal with 3:38 remaining. 
2ND QUARTER
Fayetteville State surged ahead in the second quarter with notable contributions from Amirah Allen and Alivia Evans. Allen's two successful free throws at 8:03 gave the Broncos a lead they would not relinquish. This set the stage for a series of scoring plays, including a fast-break layup by O'Neal at 5:15. Fayetteville State's defensive prowess was highlighted by four blocks in the quarter, contributing to their 23-13 quarter score. Despite a valiant effort from the Braves, including Tiana Spann's three-point play with 1:21 remaining, the hosts maintained their advantage leading to a 32-21 halftime edge.
3RD QUARTER
Allen initiated the scoring for Fayetteville State at 9:13 with a jumper, sparking an early scoring run. Trotter contributed significantly with a 3-pointer at 4:22, keeping the momentum in Fayetteville State's favor. Despite efforts from the Braves, including a layup by Tiana Spann at 4:39 and a jumper by Lauren Bell at 2:58, Fayetteville State closed the quarter with a commanding lead, highlighted by Navaeh Colon's 3-pointer at 1:12. The Broncos held a 59-41 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
4TH QUARTER
UNC Pembroke outscored Fayetteville State 17-11 in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit. Shaymiah Bailey contributed a layup at 9:26 and a tip-in at 4:58. Keziyah Sanders made a key 3-pointer with 2:49 remaining, narrowing the gap to nine points. Despite a strong defensive effort, including five steals in the quarter, the Braves couldn't catch up. Allen sealed the game for Fayetteville State with a free throw in the final second, bringing the score to 70-58.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Tiana Spann logged her first double-double with a team-best 14 points and 10 rebounds. 
+ Newcomer Shaymiah Bailey tallied her first collegiate double-double with 13 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. The freshman went 6-for-12 from the field in 27 minutes with two assists and one steal. 
+ Anastasia Sinclair added a dozen points and five rebounds in 37 minutes of work. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke outscored Fayetteville State 34-22 with points in the paint.
+ The Braves shot 34.4 percent from the field while the Broncos shot 38.1 percent. 
+ FSU added 14 points in transition while UNCP had just six points from fast breaks.
