Baseball Splits With Lake Erie On Opening Day

CARY, N.C. – UNC Pembroke tallied six extra base hits and excellent outings from HL Smith and Seth Willis to take an 11-2 win in Game 1, but were held to just five hits total in Game 2 on the way to dropping the nightcap 2-1 to Lake Erie in Opening Day action Saturday at the USA Baseball National Training Complex.

Will Hood, Luis Ramirez, and Blake Hinson each homered for the Braves in the opener, while HL Smith got the win after going a pre-determined four innings, with newcomer Seth Willis picking up the save after coming on in relief to start the fifth inning.

Isaias Villarreal's seventh-inning RBI triple tied the score at 1-1 in Game 2, before the Storm retook the lead in the eighth and then stranded the tying run at third base in the ninth to close out the win.
 
UNCP (1-1) dropped to 5-2 in the all-time series against Lake Erie (1-1).

The two squads will meet again for the rubber match Sunday. First pitch is set for noon.

KEY INNINGS (GAME 1)
BOT 2 Will Hood recorded UNCP's first hit and run scored of the 2025 season with a solo blast to center field to stake the Braves to a 1-0 lead.
BOT 7 Luis Ramirez joined the home run club with a solo shot to left to stretch the lead to 4-1. Landon Lucas reached via a walk and would come around to score on Jake Bradley's RBI single. Kasen McCawley would follow with a two-run single two batters later to make it 7-1. Blake Hinson capped off the inning with a two-run shot just inside the right field foul pole to give the Braves a 9-1 lead.
BOT 8 Ramirez walked, stole second, and advanced to third on a fly out before trotting home on a balk, while Bradley tacked on the final run with an RBI double.
KEY INNINGS (GAME 2)
TOP 2 Lake Erie's Mannuk Cadiz led off the frame with a triple to right center and would come home to score on Israel Espinosa's RBI groundout to give the Storm a quick 1-0 lead.
BOT 7 Seth Moore worked a leadoff walk before and would be lifted for pinch-runner Hayden Davis, who moved to second on Ramses Cordova's sac bunt and to third on a groundout, before jogging home on Villarreal's game-tying triple.
TOP 8 Zach Hoskins led off with a hit by pitch, stole second, and scored the game-winning run on Espinosa's RBI single.
