Women's Basketball Battles, Falls To No. 6 North Georgia In Regionals

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team shot 55.5 percent from the floor in the first quarter, but a late run from North Georgia helped the No. 6 Nighthawks to a 78-64 victory over the Braves in the NCAA Southeast Regional Tournament on Friday inside the UNG Convocation Center. 
 
The setback for the Braves (22-9) had four players that scored in double-figures, including a double-double from Kelci Adams. The Nighhawks (30-2) will now play the winner of Francis Marion and Columbus State tomorrow at 7:30 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
North Georgia scored the first six points of the contest, but UNC Pembroke scored the next six points to tie the score after a fastbreak layup from Anastasia Sinclair. The Braves used a 6-3 surge capped off with a layup from Kelci Adams to push their lead out to 12-9, but a triple from Emily Trushel knotted the score at 12 with 4:30 left in the period. UNCP shot 55.5 percent from the field and held a slight 22-21 advantage after the opening quarter.
2ND QUARTER
North Georgia started the period on an 11-3 run polished off with a layup from Ava McGlockton with 4:35 remaining in the half. Hannah Russell cut the UNCP deficit back to 34-29 after a pair of buckets, but the hosts held a 38-29 lead as the teams headed into the locker rooms. 
3RD QUARTER
North Georgia extended its lead out to 42-29 following a Caroline Martin layup, but a 10-2 run from UNC Pembroke capped off with a triple from Kelci Adams worked the Braves deficit back to 44-39 just four minutes into the period. The hosts pushed their lead out to 49-39 with a layup from Caroline Martin, but Tiana Spann's old-fashioned three-point play worked the UNCP deficit back to 49-42 with three minutes on the clock. The Nighthawks shot 56.2 percent from the field and closed out the period on a 10-2 run to hold a 59-44 lead as the teams headed into the final stanza. 
4TH QUARTER
A three from Anastasia Sinclair in transition whittled the Braves deficit back to 59-48 just 30 seconds into the period, but 14-4 surge from North Georgia gave the hosts their largest lead of the contest, 73-52, following a three from Emily Trushel with 3:42 remaining in regulation to help fuel the outcome. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Hannah Russell finished with a team-best 16 points on a 7-for-14 shooting performance. The senior dished out a pair of assists and had one rebound in 28 minutes of work.
+ Anastasia Sinclair chipped in 14 points and was 2-for-2 from the perimeter. The Charlotte native had a pair of assists, two steals and one rebound. 
+ Tiana Spann came off of the bench to add 13 points in 12 minutes. Spann pulled down four rebounds as well.
+ Kelci Adams recorded a double-double with 10 points and a team-best 12 rebounds. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 41.3 percent from the field while North Georgia shot 50.8 percent from the floor. 
+ The Braves scored 15 points in transition and outscored the Nighthawks 13-9 with points from the bench. 
+ UNG outscored UNCP 52-34 with points inside the paint.
