Baseball Routs Chowan In Series Opener

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – UNC Pembroke scored multiple runs in six different innings and allowed just one Chowan hit on the way to a 21-1 win Friday afternoon in the series opener at Hawkins Field.

Every starter recorded at least one hit and scored at least one run as the Braves tallied season highs in both categories.

Spencer Ledford picked up the win, going five innings and allowing just one hit and an earned run, to go along with seven strikeouts. Rhett Burley struck out a career-high seven in three relief innings.

Landon Lucas led the offensive barrage, turning in a 4-6 day, with a double, two home runs, and six RBI. Will Hood drove in three on a 2-4 showing, Isaias Villarreal chipped in with three hits, while Blake Hinson and Ramses Cordova also adding home runs in the victory.

The Braves (18-10, 7-6 CC) improved to 33-4 in the all-time series with the Hawks (4-17, 2-11 CC).

UNCP will be back in action Saturday as the two squads wrap up the series with a doubleheader. First pitch is set for noon.

KEY INNINGS
TOP 3 After scoring two runs in the second inning, Landon Lucas added two more with an oppo-boppo, before Hayden Davis doubled and came around to score on Will Hood's RBI single to make it 5-0.
TOP 6 After a six-run top of the fourth, Lucas struck for his second homer of the day, this one a solo blast to center to stretch the lead to 12-1.
TOP 7 Luis Ramirez was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and came around to score on a Ramses Cordova two-run blast to left to make it 14-1. Davis brought home two more with a triple, while Hood added an RBI single to make it 17-1.
TOP 9 The Braves would tack on two more in the eighth, before Blake Hinson joined the home-run club with a two-run blast to make it 21-1.
