Baseball Drops Slugfest To Francis Marion, Eliminated From Conference Carolinas Tournament

GASTONIA, N.C. – Fifth-seeded UNC Pembroke rallied back from an early 11-2 deficit to cut the lead to 12-10 in the seventh inning, but top-seeded Francis Marion held on for a 16-12 win to eliminate the Braves in Conference Carolinas Tournament action Friday at CaroMont Health Park.

Blake Hinson led the way offensively, turning in a 5-6 day, including two doubles. Luis Ramirez and Jake Bradley each added two-run homers.

Kasen McCawley kept the Braves in the game with 4.2 innings of one-run ball out of the bullpen.

The Braves (28-22) fell to 50-77-1 in the all-time series with the Patriots (40-12). 

UNCP will now have to rely on an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Division II Selection Show is scheduled for Sunday, May 11.

KEY INNINGS
TOP 1 Francis Marion struck first, using a Rayth Petersen two-run single and an Owen Taylor sac fly to take a 3-0 lead.
BOT 1 The Braves answered right back as Blake Hinson led off with a double and Luis Ramirez sent a blast over the left-field wall to cut the lead to 3-2.
TOP 3 The Patriots would stretch the lead to 11-2, with the big blast coming on a Charlie Bussey grand slam.
BOT 3 UNCP chipped away at the deficit, using a two-run homer from Jake Bradley to make it 11-4.
BOT 4 Isaias Villarreal reached on a leadoff single and moved to second on Jacob Smith's walk. Villarreal would eventually score on a Ramses Cordova RBI groundout, while Hinson drove in Smith with a two-out single to make it 11-6.
BOT 7 Hinson and Ramirez each singled and moved up 90 feet on Bradley's walk. Will Hood and Villarreal each worked RBI walks to make it 12-8, while Morgan Padgett followed with a pinch-hit two-RBI single to cut it to 12-10.
