Evington Breaks School Record, Women's Basketball Steamrolls Mount Olive

MOUNT OLIVE – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball shot 48.1 percent from the field and made 11 three-pointers to help fuel a 65-45 victory over Mount Olive on Wednesday evening inside Kornegay Arena. 

The Braves (7-10, 7-3 CC) have now won their last three games and have also won their last seven contests against Mount Olive. The Trojans (5-11, 2-8 CC) have now lost their last three contests.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
Kayla Jackson initiated the scoring for Mount Olive with a layup at 9:28, while Bre'Asia Washington responded for UNC Pembroke with a layup at 9:06 to even the sore. Savannah McAfee contributed significantly for Mount Olive, converting on a fastbreak layup at 8:17. Natalie Evington was a key player for the Braves, scoring both inside and from beyond the arc, including a fastbreak 3-pointer at 1:21 to level the score at 14 apiece. Both teams had strong defensive efforts, highlighted by blocks from McAfee and Shaymiah Bailey, as they remained deadlocked at the end of the first quarter.
2ND QUARTER
The Braves gained momentum in the second quarter with a strong offensive display, outscoring Mount Olive 14-5. Grace Ikenegbu knocked down a jumper at 9:11, which tied the score at 16 apiece. Breanna Perry and Anastasia Sinclair each added a triple followed by a layup from Breanna Perry to push the UNCP lead out to 24-16 with 4:52 on the clock. Natalie Evington hit a setback three to close out the half and send the teams to the locker room with UNCP leading 28-19. 
3RD QUARTER
The Braves extended their lead significantly during the third quarter, capitalizing on strong shooting from beyond the arc. Tiana Spann started the quarter by converting two free throws and followed with a jumper to push the score to 32-19. Natalie Evington was instrumental with her three-point shooting, hitting multiple long-range shots, including one with 10 seconds remaining, to close the quarter at 51-31. Mount Olive struggled to keep pace, despite a 3-pointer from Jada Priebe and a late jumper by Priebe with 37 seconds left.
4TH QUARTER
The Braves maintained their lead in the final quarter, starting with a 3-pointer from Natalie Evington at 9:32. Anastasia Sinclair added a layup shortly after, capitalizing on a turnover by Chloe Kester. Tiana Spann contributed significantly with a layup and an offensive rebound, helping the Braves sustain their momentum. The Trojans managed to close the gap slightly with free throws from Kayla Jackson and a fastbreak layup by Jayla Hicks, but the Braves held steady, matching the Trojans' 14 points in the quarter to secure their advantage.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Natalie Evington finished with a career and game-high 29 points on a 10-for-20 shooting performance. The junior broke her own school record with nine made three-pointers in 24 minutes of work.
+ Tiana Spann posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
+ Keziyah Sanders dished out five assists and had a pair of steals, while Grace Ikenegbu pulled down seven rebounds and also had a pair of steals. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 48.1 percent from the field and held Mount Olive to 30.2 percent shooting. It was the lowest shooting percentage for UMO in the last nine games.
+ The Braves scored 22 points from 14 Trojans turnovers. 
+ UNCP posted a 37-29 advantage in rebounds. 
UP NEXT
Saturday's regularly scheduled contest against Lees-McRae has been postponed due to inclement weather. The makeup date is Feb. 16 at 5 p.m. at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. UNCP will be back in action on Jan. 28 when they travel to Wilson to face Barton. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. inside the Wilson Gymnasium.
