Big Fourth Quarter Helps Women's Basketball Rally By Barton

WILSON – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team trailed by 24 points in the first half but rallied to outscore Barton 28-10 in the fourth quarter to secure an 78-75 comeback victory over the Bulldogs on Wednesday evening inside Wilson Gymnasium. 

The Braves (8-10, 8-3 CC) have now won their last four games and improve to 16-6 all-time against Barton when playing in Wilson. The setback for the Bulldogs (11-8, 7-4 CC) snapped a three-game win streak and are now 4-4 when playing at home.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
The first quarter saw Barton establish control early with a strong offensive performance, leading to a 26-11 advantage over UNC Pembroke. Leah Hampton contributed significantly, hitting a 3-pointer and a fastbreak layup to give the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead. Bre'Asia Washington scored the first points for UNC Pembroke at the 7:18 mark, but Barton maintained their momentum with consistent scoring, including a late jumper by Lauren Mingo to close the period with the hosts holding a 26-11 advantage. 
2ND QUARTER
Makayla Noble led Barton with a strong start in the second quarter, scoring seven of her team's first nine points, including a layup and a jumper to extend the Barton lead out to 33-11 just two minutes into the period. Tiana Spann stopped the Barton scoring run with a jumper, followed by a Breanna Perry three-pointer with six minutes remaining in the half to cut the UNCP deficit back to 37-16. The Braves finished the half on a 13-5 run capped off with a layup from Breanna Perry as time expired to send the teams to the locker rooms with Barton leading 42-29. 
3RD QUARTER
Barton led the third quarter with a strong offensive showing, hitting 10 of their 17 field goal attempts. Bre'Asia Washington contributed early for the Braves converting on an old-fashioned three-point play to cut the UNC Pembroke deficit back to 42-32 at the 9:40 mark. Despite Bre'Asia Washington's efforts, Barton maintained their lead, aided by a layup from Mingo at 3:08, extending their advantage to 57-43. Anastasia Sinclair added a fastbreak layup and free throw with 11 seconds left, but Barton's Celeste Bailey made good on a layup as time expired to give the hosts a 65-50 lead heading into the final period.
4TH QUARTER
The Braves staged a significant comeback in the final period, overcoming a deficit to secure a 78-75 victory against Barton. Bre'Asia Washington was instrumental, scoring multiple times, including a layup at 3:47 and making key free throws in the final seconds. Natalie Evington's 3-pointer with 52 seconds remaining gave the visitors a critical lead at 74-73. Despite Barton's efforts, including a late layup by Lauren Mingo, the Braves maintained their edge with Bre'Asia Washington's final free throws sealing the win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Bre'Asia Washington finished with a career and game-high 31 points in 39 minutes. The junior flirted with a double-double with eight rebounds, while dishing out six assists and two steals. 
+ Tiana Spann matched a career-high with 14 points on a 5-for-5 shooting performance. Spann pulled down seven defensive rebounds and finished with a pair of steals. 
+ Natalie Evington added nine points while Breanna Perry turned in eight points. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 43.1 percent from the field, while Barton shot 47.7 percent from the field. 
+ The Braves held Barton to 3-for-17 (17.6%) shooting from the field in the fourth quarter, while UNCP went 8-for-12 (66.6%) from the floor during the final period. 
+ The Black & Gold outscored the Bulldogs 49-33 in the second half, and posted a 28-10 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter. 
+ UNCP went 24-for-34 from the free throw line and scored 15 points in transition.

The Braves will hit the road to Tigerville, S.C. on Saturday to face North Greenville. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. inside Hayes Gymnasium.
