Women's Basketball Fights Off King In Conference Victory

BRISTOL, Tenn. The UNC Pembroke women's basketball pulled down 18 offensive rebounds and shot 41.5 percent from the floor on the way to a 72-68 victory over King on Saturday afternoon inside the Student Center Complex. 

The Braves (3-8, 3-1 CC) snapped a two game skid and have now won the last six meetings with King. The setback for the Tornado (5-6, 2-2 CC) have now lost their last two games and fall to 3-3 when playing at home.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
The first quarter opened with King taking an early lead as Aliyah Hawkins drained a three-pointer just 22 seconds into the game. Shaymiah Bailey responded for UNC Pembroke, contributing six points, including a successful pair of free throws at 6:55, as the Braves trailed 6-5. Anastasia Sinclair then brought the Braves ahead with back-to-back layups, making it 11-10 with 4:41 remaining. However, King regained control with a three-pointer by Le'Aije Ellington at 3:02. As the quarter concluded, Shaymiah Bailey's layup ended the period with King holding a slight 18-15 lead.
2ND QUARTER
In an eventful second quarter, UNC Pembroke took control with a 21-12 scoring advantage over King. Camille Kerridge initiated the scoring with a three-pointer at 9:35 to tie the score at 18 apiece. Bre'Asia Washington and Shaymiah Bailey contributed crucial points in the paint, with Bailey also adding a pair of free throws at 1:12 to extend the lead for the Braves out to 33-30. Natalie Evington's fastbreak three-pointer with 49 seconds remaining in the half sent the teams to the locker rooms with UNC Pembroke holding a 36-30 lead. 
3RD QUARTER
Bre'Asia Washington initiated the scoring for UNC Pembroke with a layup at the 9:10 mark to give UNCP a 38-30 lead, but King quickly responded with a 9-4 surge to cut its deficit back to 42-39 with 6:30 on the clock. The Tornado would eventually knot the score at 47 following an old-fashioned three-point play from Raven Addison, but a three from Breanna Perry and a layup from Shaymiah Bailey put UNCP back out in front 52-47 with 1:43 left to play in the quarter. The hosts scored the final five points of the period from the charity stripe as the score was locked at 52 apiece heading into the final period. 
4TH QUARTER
Anastasia Sinclair and Grace Ikenegbu scored a combined seven points to start the quarter to push the UNCP lead out to 59-54 with 7:36 remaining in regulation. However, King answered with five straight points to knot the score at 59 apiece. Natalie Evington knocked down a key triple with 4:38 remaining in regulation to cushion the UNCP lead65-59.  In the closing moments, Keziyah Sanders sealed the win by converting two free throws with 12 seconds left, ensuring a four-point cushion for UNC Pembroke.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Shaymiah Bailey finished with a game and career-high 23 points on an 8-for-12 shooting performance. The freshman posted her second career double-double matching her career-high in rebounds with 11. 
+ Anastasia Sinclair added a dozed points after going 5-for-11 from the field. Sinclair dished out four assists and pulled down one rebounds in 30 minutes of work.
+ Natalie Evington came off of the bench to also add a dozen points with four triples. 
+ Grace Ikenegbu nearly registered a double-double with nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 41.5 percent from the field while King shot 40.7 percent from the floor.
+ The Braves posted a 46-29 advantage in rebounds. 18 of UNCP's rebounds were on the offensive glass.
+ The Black & Gold shot better than 40 percent from the floor in three of the four quarters. 
+ UNCP held the lead for 50.4 percent of Saturday's victory. 
UP NEXT
The Braves will make the short trip to Florence, S.C., on Wednesday for the Battle of I-95 with Francis Marion. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. inside the Smith University Center.
