Women's Basketball Falls At Ferrum

FERRUM, Va. – Ferrum held the lead for 84.1 percent of Wednesday's contest and scored 40 points in the paint to fuel a 58-53 victory over the UNC Pembroke women's basketball team inside Swartz Gymnasium. 

The Braves (9-12, 9-5 CC) have now lost two out of their last three games and fall to 5-7 when playing on the road this season. The Panthers (8-16, 6-10 CC) have now won their last two games.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
Sofia Ponce of Ferrum scored the first points with a layup, setting the tone for a competitive first quarter. UNC Pembroke briefly took the lead at 7:18 with a layup from Grace Ikenegbu to make the score 7-4. Ferrum regained control with a 3-pointer by Aleksandra Kubiak at 2:13, pushing the score to 13-9. The period concluded with Breyana Kimmons scoring a layup and converting a free throw after being fouled, giving the Panthers an 18-11 lead.
2ND QUARTER
Natalie Evington's early 3-pointer at 9:38 helped close the gap for the Braves, cutting the deficit back to 18-14. Midway through the quarter, Natalie Evington struck again with another successful 3-pointer at 6:28, cutting the deficit to three points. Abby Sheets contributed with a crucial 3-pointer at 3:18, narrowing the score further to 24-20. Bre'Asia Washington's layup with 48 seconds remaining brought the Braves within two, but Ferrum responded with a layup from Maslyn Mosbacher to maintain their lead. Washington's free throw with just 5 seconds left ended the quarter with the Braves trailing 28-25.
3RD QUARTER
The third quarter featured a tight contest as the Braves and Ferrum exchanged leads. Natalie Evington hit a critical 3-pointer at 8:05 to bring the Braves within two points. Grace Ikenegbu's performance was pivotal, sinking two free throws at 7:23 to tie the game and later adding a layup at 3:34 to keep the visitors close. Despite a defensive effort by Ferrum, which included four steals during the quarter, the Braves managed to outscore the home team 11-10 in the period. The quarter concluded with a free throw by Grace Ikenegbu, narrowing Ferrum's lead to 38-36.
4TH QUARTER
In a closely contested fourth quarter, the Braves and Ferrum exchanged leads multiple times. Tiana Spann's layup at 7:33 tied the game at 40-41, and Bre'Asia Washington's layup at 6:46 briefly put the Braves ahead, 42-41. Ferrum responded with a 3-pointer from Kimmons at 5:32, pushing them back in front 46-44. Keziyah Sanders' foul with 46 seconds left allowed Kimmons to extend the Panthers' lead to 55-51 with two free throws. Despite a late layup from Bre'Asia Washington narrowing the margin to 55-53, Mosbacher's layup with 11 seconds left secured a 58-53 victory for Ferrum.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Natalie Evington finished with 12 points on four made triples. The junior pulled down six rebounds in 34 minutes of work. 
+ Tiana Spann also had a dozen points on a 6-for-11 shooting performance. Spann pulled down four rebounds in 28 minutes as well.
+ Bre'Asia Washington finished with 11 points and six rebounds, while Grace Ikenegbu tallied seven points and seven rebounds. 
NOTABLES
+ Ferrum shot 46.8 percent from the field, while UNC Pembroke was limited to 35.7-percent shooting.
+ The Black & Gold were just 8-for-13 from the free throw line, while the Panthers finished the game going 12-for-19 from the charity stripe. 
+ Ferrum outscored UNCP 40-28 with points in the paint. 
UP NEXT
The Braves will return to action at home on Saturday when they host Southern Wesleyan for Play4Kay Day. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. Fans are encouraged to wear pink.
