Baseball Drops Series Opener At Mount Olive

MOUNT OLIVE – UNC Pembroke rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth, but Mount Olive answered with three runs of their own in the bottom half to take an 8-7 walk-off win in game one Friday evening at Scarborough Field.

Jacob Smith got the no decision after turning in another quality start, going six complete and allowing just one earned run with five strikeouts. Daniel Stephens turned in a 3-4 day, while Landon Lucas and Morgan Padgett each went 2-5 with two RBI.

The Braves (5-1, 0-1 CC) fell to 20-35 all-time against the Trojans (2-3, 1-0 CC).

KEY INNINGS
TOP 3 Daniel Stephens laced a one-out triple and came home on Peyton Young's RBI to break the scoreless tie. A Mason Mozeley double set the state for Landon Lucas, who doubled down the first-base line to score Young and Mozeley to make it 3-0.
BOT 7 After Mount Olive scored single runs in the fourth and sixth inning, the Trojans tacked on three more in the seventh to give the hosts a 5-3 lead.
TOP 8 Morgan Padgett singled and eventually came home on Tyler Steele's RBI double to cut the UMO lead to 5-4.
TOP 9 Lucas singled and moved to third on a Hayden Davis single, while Padgett followed with a two-run double to give the Braves a 6-5 lead. Ashton Donathan singled home Padgett to stretch the lead to 7-5.
BOT 9 Mount Olive used two walks, a hit by pitch, a wild pitch, and two singles, including the walk-off hit from Garrett Moffett to take the 8-7 win.
