North Greenville Holds Off Women's Basketball

TIGERVILLE, S.C. – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team shot 45.1 percent from the field, but North Greenville scored 19 points from 19 turnovers to defeat the Braves 64-63 on Monday evening inside Hayes Gymnasium. 

The Braves (11-15, 11-8 CC) have now lost their last three contests on the road and fall to 5-9 when playing away from Pembroke. The Trailblazers (9-19, 4-15 CC) snapped an eight-game skid and picked up their first win over UNCP in the six game series.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
Maliyiah Mason opened the scoring for North Greenville with a layup at 9:14. Bre'Asia Washington led UNC Pembroke with a series of successful plays, including two free throws at 3:17 that pushed the visitors ahead temporarily. Mason was pivotal in keeping the score tied, contributing a last-minute layup to level the score at 18-18. Both teams displayed balanced scoring efforts, setting the stage for a closely contested matchup.
2ND QUARTER
In the second quarter, Grace Ikenegbu and Bre'Asia Washington led the Braves with early scoring efforts, including a layup and jumper, respectively. North Greenville's Isabel Waite quickly responded, tying the game at 20-20 with a layup at 9:23. Natalie Evington's three-pointer at 4:40 extended UNC Pembroke's lead to 29-22, but North Greenville's Kayla Gaston narrowed the gap with a three-pointer at 4:01. The quarter culminated in a tense finish, as Natalie Evington hit a three-pointer with 33 seconds remaining, only for Mason to tie the game at 34-34 with a layup with seven seconds left to send the teams to the locker room. 
3RD QUARTER
Shaymiah Bailey was instrumental in this stretch, scoring a layup and converting a free throw to push the visitors ahead 39-37 at the 7:41 mark. Bre'Asia Washington and Natalie Evington contributed significantly, with Evington hitting a crucial three-pointer to extend the lead to 44-39 with 5:38 remaining. The North Greenville's Mason managed a late layup to narrow the gap, but Grace Ikenegbu's layup with 18 seconds left sealed the quarter giving the Braves a 54-49 advantage.
4TH QUARTER
Tiana Spann provided a defensive highlight for UNC Pembroke with a block at 36 seconds remaining, but the Trailblazers consistent pressure paid off with crucial points. The game was tied at 57 with 4:02 left when Emery Lindsey's layup shifted the momentum. Despite a late three-pointer from Natalie Evington narrowing the gap to one, the North Greenville's Mason secured the win with a layup as the Braves were unable to capitalize on the final possession. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Natalie Evington finished with 18 points fueled by six three-pointers. Evington also had three assists and two rebounds in 36 minutes of work.
+ Bre'Asia Washington also had 18 points on a 7-for-12 shooting performance. The junior nearly registered a double-double with nine rebounds in 37 minutes of action. 
+ Grace Ikenegbu finished with a double-double with a dozen points and 11 rebounds. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 45.1 percent from the field while North Greenville shot 43.4 percent from the field. 
+ North Greenville picked up 29 points from its bench compared to six bench points from UNCP.
+ The Braves made just 11-of-18 free throw attempts.
+ NGU scored 19 points from 19 UNC Pembroke turnovers.

The Braves will play their final regular season game on Wednesday when they host Chowan for Senior Night. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. Seinor Day festivities will begin prior to tipoff.
