Women's Basketball Falls To Chowan On Senior Night

PEMBROKE – Chowan shot 53.1 percent from the field and scored 52 points in the paint on the way to a 78-56 victory over the UNC Pembroke women's basketball team on Wednesday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. 

The Braves (11-16, 11-9 CC) have now lost their last three contests and finish the season with a 6-7 record when playing at home. The victory for the Hawks (16-8, 14-6 CC) marked the fifth consecutive win and improve to 7-4 when playing on the road.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
The game commenced with Chowan taking an early lead as Aquarius Pettaway scored a layup  just 10 seconds into the first quarter. Chowan extended its advantage with Alexandria James-Fearon and Ayanna Rutledge contributing to the scoring, resulting in a 10-0 run. The Braves responded midway through the quarter with Bre'Asia Washington breaking their scoring drought at 6:55, followed by contributions from Keziyah Sanders and Natalie Evington to reduce the deficit. As time dwindled, Camille Kerridge's jumper with 4 seconds remaining brought the Braves within one point, closing the first quarter at 15-14 in favor of Chowan.
2ND QUARTER
Chowan took control in the second quarter, outscoring the Braves 22-13. Nyeisha Savage's layup initiated the scoring at 9:41 to give the Hawks a 17-14 advantage. Bre'Asia Washington was a key performer for the Braves, contributing multiple layups, including one at 5:48 to work the score back to 23-20. Chowan's defense was strong, with three blocks and two steals, while Ayanna Rutledge and Daneesha Briggs each added crucial baskets, including Briggs' two 3-pointers late in the quarter. The quarter ended with Chowan holding a 37-27 advantage.
3RD QUARTER
Chowan dominated the third quarter, outscoring the Braves 24-8. Yasmine Brown and Nyeisha Savage led Chowan's scoring efforts, with Brown contributing a layup and a free throw to push the score to 46-27. Savage was instrumental, adding a series of layups and jumpers, including a critical layup at 5:35 assisted by Ayanna Rutledge. Bre'Asia Washington secured two free throws for the Braves, while Breanna Perry hit a 3-pointer to whittle the deficit back to 52-32 with 3:43 on the clock. Despite the efforts from UNCP, Chowan's strong defense, highlighted by Savage's multiple blocks, kept the Braves to just 12.5 percent shooting during the period as the Hawks held a 61-35 lead heading into the final period.
4TH QUARTER
Bre'Asia Washington initiated the scoring with a layup at 9:46, followed by two successful free throws shortly after as UNCP trailed 61-39. Shaymiah Bailey contributed with a layup followed by a three pointer from Natalie Evington at the 7:36 mark to cut the score back to 66-44. Despite a strong performance by Chowan's Alexandria James-Fearon, who made several key baskets, the Braves maintained control throughout the quarter. The game concluded with Bre'Asia Washington scoring the final layup with just five seconds remaining, but Chowan maintained control of the game for the victory. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Bre'Asia Washington finished with a team-best 17 points and went 5-for-6 from the free throw line. The junior grabbed four rebounds, added three assists and had a trio of steals in 32 minutes of work.
+ Shaymiah Bailey came off of the bench to nearly register a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds. The freshman went 5-for-9 from the field with one block and one steal. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 39.3 percent from the field while Chowan shot 53.1 percent from the floor. 
+ Chowan made good on 8-of-10 free throw attempts, while UNCP was just 10-for-22 from the charity stripe. 
+ The Hawks outscored the Braves 52-30 with points in the paint and scored 20 points from 16 UNCP turnovers. 
UP NEXT
The Braves will turn their attention to the Conference Carolinas Tournament. UNCP will be the eighth seed in the tournament and face #11 Ferrum in the first round on Sunday. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. inside Williams Gymnasium in Banner Elk, N.C.
