Women's Basketball Downs Emmanuel In Overtime Thriller

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team shot 45.2 percent from the field and picked up 26 points from its bench to help fuel a 75-70 overtime victory over Emmanuel on Saturday afternoon inside the Shaw Athletic Center. 

The Braves (9-11, 9-4 CC) have now won five out of their last six games and improve to 6-2 against Emmanuel. The Lions (11-10, 6-9 CC) have now lost their last two contests and fall to 5-7 when playing at home this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1ST QUARTER
The first quarter opened with Tiana Spann putting UNC Pembroke on the board via a free throw and a layup. Bre'Asia Washington quickly followed with a layup, helping the Braves establish an early 5-2. However, Emmanuel responded with a series of successful layups, including contributions from Naomi Roberts to push the hosts lead out to 12-7. Camille Kerridge's jumper and Natalie Evington's three-pointer kept the game close, tying the score at 12-12. A late jumper by Jaleia Robinson allowed the Lions to close the quarter with a 17-14 advantage over the Braves.
2ND QUARTER
In a closely contested second quarter, both teams tallied eight points, maintaining a narrow game margin. Camille Kerridge scored early with a layup at 9:21cutting the UNCP deficit back 17-16. Kate Jackson responded for Emmanuel with a 3-pointer at 5:57, extending their lead out to 21-16. Breanna Perry knocked down a 3-pointer at 5:02 to cut the score to 21-19,  Naomi Roberts' fastbreak layup with 42 seconds left in the quarter gave Emmanuel a slight edge sending the teams to the locker room with the hosts leading 25-22.
3RD QUARTER
The third quarter saw a back-and-forth battle between the Braves and the Lions, with the Braves edging their opponent by one point, 18-17. Grace Ikenegbu scored back-t0-back baskets to give UNCP a 30-29 advantage, but Emmanuel scored the next five points to regain a 34-30 lead. A layup from Naomi Roberts extended Emmanuel's lead out to 38-31, but UNCP outscored Emmanuel 9-4 in the final minutes to trail 42-40 heading into the fourth quarter. 
4TH QUARTER
The fourth quarter was a back-and-forth affair. Bre'Asia Washington tied the game at 42 with a layup at 8:31. The Braves briefly took the lead, 46-44, at 7:05 with a jumper from Shaymiah Bailey. However, the Lions responded quickly with Natalee Goff's jumper and free throw to regain the lead. As the quarter progressed, Bre'Asia Washington's free throws tied the game at 59 with just eight seconds remaining. Emmanuel had one final chance, but Naomi Roberts missed a layup as time expired, sending the game into overtime. 
OVERTIME
In a tight overtime, the Braves secured a 75-70 victory with strategic plays and critical scoring. Shaymiah Bailey contributed a crucial layup at 4:46, leveling the score at 61. Bre'Asia Washington emerged as a key player for UNC Pembroke, scoring a layup with 24 seconds remaining to regain the lead at 71-70. Bre'Asia Washington further extended the lead by converting four consecutive free throws in the final 20 seconds. Despite Natalee Goff's attempts to keep Emmanuel competitive, the Braves' robust defense and timely baskets clinched the win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
+ Bre'Asia Washington finished with a game and career-high 32 points and went 8-for-8 from the free throw line. The junior dished out six assists and had a pair of rebounds in 41 minutes of work.
+ Shaymiah Bailey went 4-for-5 from the field to add 10 points and flirted with a double-double with eight rebounds. 
+ Senior Tiana Spann grabbed 13 rebounds, while Grace Ikenegbu finished with 10 boards. 
NOTABLES
+ UNC Pembroke shot 45.2 percent from the field while Emmanuel shot 39.3 percent from the floor. 
+ The Braves picked up 26 points from their bench.
+ UNCP outscored Emmanuel 16-11 in overtime. 
+ The Black & Gold held the lead for just 14.9 percent of Saturday's victory. 
UP NEXT
The Braves will make the trip to Virginia on Wednesday to face Ferrum. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. inside Swartz Gymnasium.
